Agreeing with James, Ahvak is a wonderful album indeed. One of the best in "modern" RIO, In my opinionBig%20smile

Be careful with Present though, they're addictiveLOLWink

I tried to drum to Le Poison Qui Rend Fou here the other day, a bit more practising now and I think I can nail it! Smile It's awfully tricky to play after though!! Mark my words! Shocked

Ahvak will blow you away even more the second and third and fourth and fifth times.  I still hear new things with it.

What, my opinionated ramblings...? LOL

I'm going to reserve any comment on Ahvak until I've heard it again - there's a lot going on in there!

James: haha, yes, I did hear the meow. Tongue  Even though it's only one moment, they should have credited the cat with guest vocals...

I'll get around to Shub-Niggurath one of these days... Smile

Meanwhile, I've got Univers Zero, 'Heresie' to look forward to tomorrow (might not have time to play it this evening - also, I don't want to have nightmares)... Shocked Wink

Don't forget Shub-Niggurath, Miss M. Wink

Addendum: Ahvak is a terrific album and one of my favourites of all time.  Listen out for the cat's meow. Wink

I got more CDs in the mail today. Big%20smile  Which means you might - make that 'will' Tongue - see me in here again, naively blithering on about things you already know and love... LOL

Right now, I'm giving Present, 'Certitudes' a first go.  I'm only on the first track but it's a Thumbs%20Up so far!  This band could easily be my favourite RIO... they're just so instantly entertaining.  I like how it's clever stuff but you don't have to try too hard with it... Embarrassed

fine.  but I think this particular band you are pushing has more to do with Psych/noise than RIO...especially if you are talking about first wave RIO stuff.  but really does splitting hairs like this matter?  I only categorize so that I can talk about music, otherwise it is all just music.

while we are on about it, check out Burial Hex:

I have not listened to Nurse With Wound yet...

maybe this band of yours should be included in the list -with concessions *(like the fact that it is not "typical" RIO material)*

There's a song and video from this album on their myspace.  Those should be the deciding factors as to whether or not this is something you might enjoy.

Better description:

"With their fifth full length CD, Finland’s STROM.ec continue to further explore the far regions of power electronics, challenging the confines and stretching the boundary of the genre, sculpting new and innovative creations that are uniquely their own. Having been under construction for over seven years, Divine Legions shows STROM.ec with a majestic control of their craft, offering 8 tracks (including one 21 minute epic to close the CD out!) of powerful and explosive industrial music, full of volatile frequencies, brain bending, enigmatic atmospheres, hallucinatory noise, and the trademark vocal assault that few acts can rival. Presented in a luxurious 8-panel DVDigipak, designed by Jerome Nougaillon, Divine Legions Beyond Psyche represents STROM.ec at their finest, most creative form, having reached a pinnacle in an already illustrious discography..."

I'll be checking this out, thanks.

Industrial actually has much to do with progressive music.  Have you ever listened to Nurse with Wound?

And what's with the attitude?

I just fished this up from WikiPedia in a couple seconds:

Industrial music is a loose term for a number of different styles of experimental music, especially but not necessarily electronic music. The term was first used in the mid-1970s to describe the then-unique sound of Industrial Records artists. Since then, an extremely wide variety of labels and artists have since come to be called "Industrial."

So yeah, Industrial music is a huge factor in the hisotries of experimental music.  Popular bands like Hella, Lightning Bolt, and Deerhoof all took influence from the genre.  And since when does RIO have a defined sound?  RIO is more or less avant-prog, which is also another term for highly experimental music.  And with that, there aren't many walls to contain the genre in a neat, little square... it can go anywhere from noise and industrial with the likes of Nurse with Wound and to contemporary classical with the likes of Univers Zero to jazz with the likes of KoenjiHyakkei and Henry Cow to metal with the likes of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Kayo Dot to even pop with the likes of Frank Zappa.

In fact, this thread is probably the magnet of most of my replies in this entire forum.  Be open-minded, RIO isn't always "what you might expect" per se.  Throughout my ventures with this genre, I think I can say that I'm well-versed with what it has to offer.  I think others here that know me can back that up as well.

Absolute Zero do indeed rock.  The last track is very cool actually.

Anyhow, this post is to announce that I have posted an interview up with Jarno Sarkula, saxophonist of Alamaailman Vasarat and formerly bassist of the brilliant Hoyry-kone.

You can find it in the Interviews section.  Enjoy the read!

btw folks, been checking out this band Macromassa that was recommended to the ZART team & they're really, really good. The last disk i was listening to,  Lo Hecho Pérez, had very definite Residents overtones...check them out. Esp. the these two:
Lo Hecho Pérez & Um-Yu
Lo Hecho Pérez is the best imo, the others have tracks that don't quite reach that creative edge as consistently - flavours of the [90s] times - techno-y, trip-hop ish presently...but the great stuff is there too.

ok, cross Puerta Heliogabal off the list [w/ RIO ish flavour - it ain't there..it's still good, but...[reminding me of the Art of Noise a bit, tech, elec., etc]

That's understandable, Adam.  The position will always be open in the future.

Good luck next week too. Wink
