Wow - lots of great suggestions.
I'm still overwhelmed though - but in a good way.
So far PA has introduced me to Finisterre, Kerrs Pink, Ohm, and Taal (though I too tend to shy away from metal). These were pretty much random discoveries, so I'll try reading what's recommended in the forums as suggested.
Thanks.

I think the forums are definitely the best place to go if you want info on new music. It's like a community of people that are (almost) all looking to expand musical horizons so chances are good someone will start talking about a band that piques your interest.

Talk about what you like. Find someone with similar tastes, invariably they will recommend something new to you.

Surely on the forums I post threads on bands that are new on me, that by the bio or posts in the forum I think it'll match my tastes.
Another one is look the top 20 albums from each category, mostly I'll look for an album of a band I don't know, as happend with Traffic and Focus and Caravan and well more...
As I said above, I do care much of the threads happening in the forum with bands I don't know, I read a little bit to see if matches my tastes and then I'll look for some Mp3's and well you know the whole story..
Of course there are as much I will like as ones I won't, many of the recent threads have been of metal threads, and you(generally) know I detest metal, and this is for no discussion, please.

I've yet to find a new band without the streamers here. I remember going through bands of cool names, closely realted to others, familiar genres or nationalities. Of course, I had to learn about every Finnish band. At some point I sought out Eastern european bands of which I found at least 90% to be pretty awesome. Later on I built my "specialisation" or main interest around that and Cantenbury scene from which I currently own at least 3/4 of all the cds listed here. Basically I don't do random search. It's connections to others that I like. I also LOVE to find out about usicians who have played in several bands. Take Marillion. I heard their drummer plays in Arena, which I then sought out at PA, fell in love and yeah. I discovered the guitarist is from a band called Pendragon, and suddenly only through a Clutching at Straws from my dads old vinylcollection, I've got 2 new splendid bands to listen to.
I just love ProgArchives!

I keep an eye on the latest reviews, but I think lately, the latest streaming tracks have been by best source of discovery.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I like the random approach too, even if no mp3s are here sometimes the band has a site or myspace.. and the genre lists are a good random way to just discover bands, and reviews of course

Kind of all of the above. Start with a subgenre that has bands you know and move outwards, that kind of thing.
The subgenre top albums is another very good way. Or you could just click on one of the prolific collaborator's
profiles and check out what they like. If they're tastes are similar to yours then see what else they've rated high.
The mp3s are also a godsend. Generate a random list if that suits your fancy, or just click on stuff new on
the front page (how I discovered Kebnekaise). A lot of other people make threads about "what do you
recommend if I like band X, Y and Z"
Hope that helps! That's what I do anyways!

Not necessarily new music, but new to you.
I think one of the coolest services this site provides is the introduction to bands I don't know about, but there's just TOO much information. I'm a little overwhelmed.
Do you have any methods to your searches for new music, or do you just click on things at random? Or do you use the random mp3 or random review feature? What works best?
