They sound nothing like The Strokes, but I think Stupid Dream is comparable to Radiohead. Then again, we are talking about my #1 and #2 band here.

iTunes probably don't take into account the differences in style *within* a band's discography. If this compilation is your first foray into PT, you will be surprised when listening to some of their latest albums! An open mind is kinda required But fear not, it's ALL good stuff, just different!

Great to see more and more people discover the brilliance that is Porcupine Tree, despite the nay sayers around here.

Lack of fans? Are you kidding me? Next to the Mars Volta(or DT if we can count them)they are probably the most popular current prog band. Both PT and TMV showed up around the 500's in a list of the top 885 bands/artists of all time on a poll done by a radio show in 2006. Also, PT's last two albums both cracked the Billboard charts("deadwing" was 132 and "foabp" was 59). Also, when I saw them in 2005 they had filled up about 90-95 percent of a venue that seats about 1,350. Not too shabby. What other newer prog band has 1,000(or more)fans showing up at concerts? Not many that I can think of. If there are any modern prog bands that have lack of fans they would be the Flower Kings and Spock's Beard. Both of those bands were contemporaries of PT back in the 90's and all three were considered the big three of modern prog. THen once Steve Wilson started working with Opeth PT found themselves being mentioned in metal magazines and they just rose ahead all the other newer prog bands as far as popularity goes. Being signed to a major label didn't hurt either.  

i am a fan. i saw them in asheville, nc october, 2007.
i was impressed. i have "in absentia", and have heard most of deadwing.
steve wilson can come out with an acoustic guitar and sing a good pop song. then the band can play some tripped out time signatures etc. i prefer them to dream theater if i am going to dig on "pop-prog". i like them!

i like in absentia and enjoy half of deadwing half the time but am having trouble with FOABP. their older stuff is much better -ie sky moves sideways. dont really understand the extreme hype, they're good but not THAT good, but im glad they're getting people into prog. id lump them in with DT as being a good "gateway" band.

I saw PT at last at their first ever gig in Australia last week.The band are NOT short of fans here in oz.Everywhere I looked the crowd were ecstatic.The band were outstanding and I think the live set of FOABP came across even better than the cd.Along with the backdrop movies -very dark and moving songs.The band were genuinely surprised at the audience appreciation and love of all the material played.
