would bands like BEHOLD THE ARCTOPUS and CO-CONSPIRATOR count as experimental metal?

There are some really cool bands here, anything touched by the hands of toby driver being my favorite (kayo dot, maudlin of the well), but i am also a big fan of Devin Townsend (almost here because you cant really put him anywhere else),*Shels (a mix of wonderful melodies, small doses of post, post metal, and godliness) and The Pax Cecilia which remains my favorite release from '07 and my favorite FREE release of all time.

If you appreciate Toby Driver's genius you should check out his Tartar Lamb project. It's basically a duo consisting of him and Mia Matsumiya of Kayo Dot.

Tartar lamb is indeed delicious! It's hard to imagine someone, even Driver writing all sixty minuetes of sixty menotomies on sheet music.

Being the long time Dead Raven Choir fan I am, it was a pleasure to finally have Godheadscope's latest album turn up at my door step.

I probably look like a party-pooper by saying this, but the metal bands who try the hardest to look intelligent are paradoxically also those that come across as the silliest.
Just like metal isn't a genre that's well-suited to explicit humour, it's not well-suited for a self-consciously artsy approach either... there's very few metal bands that can pull those off in a way that doesn't make it look like they're bending over backwards to impress people who don't take metal seriously in the first place. A good contrast of how to do "experi-metal" right and wrong, listen to Black Sabbath's late-1970s albums. On Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage the experimentation works, on Technical Ecstasy most of the songs aren't really metal but there's only three serious misfires (the boring ballads and Rock'n'Roll Doctor)... and then there's Never Say Die which except for the first two songs is a total and utter mess. Your right, you are coming across as a party-pooper, and moe than that, your second paragraph is wrong. Metal is an extremely diverse genre of music and can be made to fit almost any approach, its most certainly not all about being loud and brash, otherwise it would be pretty useless after 30 years. I'm not saying that there arent bands that match your description, but I suggest you give a number of the bands being talked about here a good listen first. |

Guess I just have enough bad experiences with "experi-metal" to become too curmudgeonish for my own good.
I have been hearing good things about Nadja and Behold the Arctopus from people I trust, though, so I might give them a try. |

Every time I hear about Maudlin Of The Well I think of the Maudling brothers from Bal-Sagoth. Of course, I'm not expecting MotW to sound anything like Bal-Sagoth really other than both bands being metal.

MotW is NOTHING like Bal-Sagoth and their music, while bearing a definite metal influence,is such a conglomeration of different styles that pinning them down to one single genre is darn near impossible.
Toby Driver is an avant garde genius, and you should really check out his impressive body of work.

im sorry everyone, but 'Dark Suns' are really really poor, i mean, just not great stuff, i guess i cant speak on the grand scale, but ive had 'Exsistance' for a year or so now and its just not that great at all, not terrible now, but just pretty poor, drummer vocalists never work, plus he aint all the great a drummer
also, Oceansize, not a fan, i got 'frames' a while back, tryed to listen to it a few times but just couldnt get into it, really didnt hit me as anything too proggy, except for they'er meshuggah thing of "sleeping dogs and dead lions", ill try give it a listen 2moro on the bus to college but im pretty sure i wont dig it
on the lighterside, i must say im loving *Shels, only have they'er album so far, but i like her...i even sent in a voice clip thing for they'er next album *crosses fingers*
![]() if this topic concerns both experiemental AND post-metal, i must say i really dig the whole gritty low ass riff'ing in post metal, but really hate the steriotypical screamo/growling sh*tty vocals that normally acompany it
shels seem to get the balance right, and have more'so clean vocals(which i personly prefer) but other bands ive listend to in that section of progarchives just scare me off with they'er stale un-inspired same'ness Edited by TR!P - April 14 2008 at 13:30 |
