I didn't search the whole thread, but the "search" function turned up nothing so I guess they haven't been mentioned before...

They're on the post-rock voting list and I reckon they'll be added to PA, even though there's only one vote there.

Thanks, Avestin...Count my vote (for what it's worth...) in for inclusion... great music! And I can see where the Post Rock comes from, allthough I hear also some references to Yes! Well, classification is difficult...

It is a fabulous acoustic band - 3 guitars and 1 bass playing great acoustic prog-rock.
They have released last year their album Wood Knot which is a delight to listen to.
Both intricate and beautiful; imagine a prog rock band in an acoustic mode

Might Could entertains listeners by creating and performing songs with rhythmically interesting, tight, and neatly interlocking parts. They are instrumental, with a group dynamic that provides a fresh alternative to solo instrumentalists. People have told us our songs seem to draw from influences ranging from heavy metal to progressive rock to jazz, and we've been compared to King Crimson, the California Guitar Trio, Steve Morse, Michael Hedges, Megadeth, and Bela Bartok. The lineup consists of Andy Tillotson, Tim McCaskey, and Aaron Geller on guitar, with Luis "Gordo" Nasser on occasional bass detail. Andy and Aaron are the main composers.

Our story: In 2000, Andy and Tim started grad school at the University of Maryland. During a school break in 2001, Andy started recording some acoustic demos with Scott Phillips (writing collaborator on early MC material), and he returned to Maryland eager to play more. Tim joined him in some early open mic performances. Around the same time, they met Gordo, who would study and work at Maryland for the first few Might Could years as well.

Andy and Tim put out the first cheaply-made Might Could CD in November of 2003. It is now out of print and buried except for the two songs that would make it onto later recordings.

Around 2003, Tim and Andy met Aaron at an open mic. They discovered he was a perfect fit for a set of Nintendo covers (which became the Motherbrain! alter ego), and he soon became a full member of the band. With a third guitar, the band became at least 50% more interesting.

Once the lineup was set and Gordo was offered a pint of Guinness for his trouble, he agreed to lend some beefy bass assistance to the tunes.

August 2005 saw the release of All Intertwined, the first full-length and full-band Might Could album. It has been well reviewed by progressive, art-rock, and guitar-based web sites, and has been played on the radio in numerous places.

The newest album is called Wood Knot and was released in late 2007. Two songs from that album ("River of Crows" and "Synecdoche") are available on this page.

Hi-
    I've recently been listening to Alphataurus, as most of you around here know, they are an Italian prog rock band. Up until recently they were the only Italin prog I had, now I've got a dozen or so bands and I'm certain someone out there has some recommendations they could bestow upon me.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Some of the bands I have : Area,Alusa Fallax,Banco del Mutuo Soccorso,Le Orme,Osanna,Biglietto per l'inferno.... and a couple of others.

As for other bands, aside from the ones you mentioned, Balletto Di Bronzo's album Ys is a must.
De De Lind has an album with a title so long there's no way I'll write it here but it's a damn good one as is  Celeste album, Principe Di Un Giorno
Other musts in my opinion:

Metamorfosi - Inferno
Maxophone - s/t
Quella Vecchia Locanda's two albums
Pholas Dactylus - Concerto Delle Menti

Not a must, but good:
There are others I forget I know....
 
 
Also, don't neglect the current (90's and 2000's) Symphonic scene with fantastic bands like:
and others...
 
There's so much music from this country it's mind-boggling....
And all of the above is on the symphonic side...
 
Picchio Dal Pozzo, Stormy Six are two great examples of past avant-rock bands.
Of today, there are great bands like Yugen, Gecko's Tear and others which keep progressing and experimenting and expanding the horizons.

I second this- "Polars" is my favorite by them- and I like these guys much more than Meshuggah. Clap

Hello guys, I would like to recommend an obscure heavy-psych-prog band from italy: Dum Dum Power. They are from the 90's and they made an album called 'Muscle Head Music-Brain Sink/Heart Rise' for Burp Sonic Inventions in 1992. They played a sort of heavy psych folk prog and they were devoted to the sound of band like Edgar Broughton Band, Magic Muscle, Cpt. Beefheart, Groundhogs, Gong and Third Ear Band. I really don't know too much about them, but they seems to have a site on myspace (www.myspace.com/dumdumpower). I've found their cd-album in a vintage shop in Rome and I really love it. Great Sound, it remind me something played between 1969-1972 in UK. Lovely.

Ready an' Willing - Whitesnake

Not prog ok but still a great hard rock album ala Deep Purple MK 3/4. Don't be afraid to buy something from Whitesnake, this album shows what Coverdale & Co could really do, and not that junky glam metal stuff.
It's a fantastic rock album with high influences from MK 3/4 DP and their own touch. Coverdale himself describes it as blues-prog, not certainly prog but it's a total progression from what they did before.
Please you will thank me.

About Friendly Bears
Friendly Bears began playing together in Fall '00 (under the name Osos Amistosos) as a trio. In their 5-year existence, they have been able to emerge from their free-jazz roots into a style of new avant-rock music that represents strong foundations in punk, classical, metal, and jazz music.

The Bears released their debut EP, a split 12" record with Philadelphia's Infidel?/Castro! on the Ricecontrol and Epicene Sound Systems in '02. The compositions are an infusion of hardcore energy and melodic counterpoint.

In July of '05 Friendly Bears released their debut full-length record on Brooklyn's Pralaya Records, "On Oceans, Light, and Sleep" which is rooted in their older style, but also augmented by new sounds, ideas, and instrumentation.

Also in existence is a split 7" record ("The Streamwinner 7") with Asheville, North Carolina's Ahleuchatistas (made possible by Angura Sound and SAID Records). Please visit www.friendlybears.net for more info/sounds.
