VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR – The Book
Jim Christopoulos, Phil Smart - Phil And Jim Publishing - ISBN 0-95513-37- 0X Although a relatively hefty investment, this awesome and luxurious coffee table-sized book is much worth seeking, not least because it will most likely sold-out soon, especially if the quality is part of the word-of-mouth. The work of two long-time fans, this book does have an amateur feel to it, but this is part of its charm. Apart from small imperfections in the layout, only the choice of police character is a bit of a surprise, but the subject is so interesting that this quickly is forgotten. Not as easily forgotten (but this is also a welcome change) is the writing style: neither of the two writers are professional and the texts are perfectible (especially when comparing with Paul Stump or other rock writers) and they do make some rookie mistakes. When collecting the different views from the different actors, too many repetitions are slowing the reading process down. Unlike a professional writer, they chose also to print some clearly bizarre facts and odd situations/coincidences, which are very entertaining, but do make a certain impression of embellishment of the story of the group, as if this fascinating group really did need supernatural feats to make their tale more interesting. The overview of the career of all protagonists is complete within the time span of the book: we still follow what Chris Judge Smith is doing in the mid-70’s, all Hammill solo records are well discussed, we have a complete run down of activity during the break-up years, we discover in detail which tour went great and which broke the group up (finance and health-wise) and we see that Banton was clearly more subjected to bad luck than his comrades. Two facts are however not fully made to light: it seems that the controversial artwork of Silent Corner got the silent treatment, and we still do not know how Guy Evans was seen hanging from the wrong side of a third-floor hotel balcony, this fact was simply not discussed with the main proponent. Too bad, because this explanation would probably be at least as juicy as that famous artwork ;-). Visually-speaking many delightful pictures scattered within the whole book (a welcome change from all these books where the scarce photos are concentrated in the middle glossy page section) and many artefacts and documents (the tour schedules instructions from their management are fascinating), and much group memorabilia (not always of the best of taste around the Godbluff and World Record era), justify fully the price of the book. 2005 came as a magic year for the Generator, with the reunion album Present ( not discussed in depth though), a not-extended-enough tour, the remastering of all of their albums (which was much-needed as well as long-overdue) and, icing on the cake, this phenomenal book, which is clearly a must for all fans of the group. A thorough job from two unconditional fans whom are no professionals, but are we ever glad they are not. |

I received this in my mailbox today, pleasantly surprised that The
Book still merits a review in a national publication two years after its debut. From the forthcoming issue of Rock n Reel (one of those British glossy mags): "Van der Graaf Generator: The Book by Jim Christopulos and Phil Smart This great big book all about Van der Graaf Generator will surely meet all of your Van der Graaf Generator reading-material needs. Written by two devoted yet intelligent fans, it is very thoroughly researched and includes lots of nice pictures. Eschewing the indulgence of an extended musical analysis of their own, Mr. Christopulos and Mr. Smart tell a chronological tale of the band's history, in terms of behind-the-scenes issues, anecdotes of life on the road, contemporary reviews and a notable lack of musical differences. Peter Hammill's involvement was minimal (in the book, not the band, obviously), so there's less focus on the actual song writing. Every other member of Johnny Rotten's favourite prog band was thoroughly interviewed and judiciously quoted. As you would expect from such an imaginative bunch, their observations are thoughtful and often rather witty. Van der Graaf were one of the first rock bands to thoughtfully express the dark side of the psyche. They were (and are) existential and gothic, musicianly and – by rock'n'roll standards – somewhat urbane. It is right that their influence has been acknowledged by luminaries from succeeding eras who have been similarly inclined. Recent reissues have outsold the original releases. The re-formation in 2005 occurred just before completion of the book, and so serves as a fitting climax. Such a band deserves a good book about it, and now it's got one. A fairly compelling yarn, not just for diehard fans but also for anyone with and interest in the history of art rock, or just in the arguably golden era of the 70s, the heyday of the Van der Graaf generation. Rychard Carrington" |

Is there anywhere I can buy this book not on vandergraafgenerator.co.uk? I would love to have it but it's extraordinarily expensive. I can't justify more than $30 for it...

Amazon.co.uk have it. Although they have a "temporarily unavailable" message up, that's terminally frustrating because Phil has sent a shipment of books to them and their wholesalers so they do have it. Amazon somehow has a much better postage rate than Phil does at the VdGG website. There are other Amazon-like outlets in Europe that sell the book, a google check for "Van der Graaf Generator The Book" will unearth them.

Just a note, for those who may not know:
Anthony Minghella, who died, aged 54, on the 18th March, was interviewed for the The Book and he'll not only be sorely missed in the film world, but also as a VdGG fan. I am sure Jim (Christopulos) and Phil (Smart) will extend their thanks for Anthony's contribution to the book, it sounds like he was a very friendly guy indeed. Yes, I was in minor shock yesterday when I heard about AM's untimely passing. I still have the tape where I 'interviewed' him for about 40 minutes re: his love of VdGG and his experience of seeing them a bunch of times when he was a kid. We took some quotes from this and put them in The Book. I also have an email from AM to Hugh Banton (forwarded to me by Hugh) the day after the RFH reunion concert where Anthony talks about how much he enjoyed the show.
Too sad.

In the meantime, there is a MySpace page set up for the book and in the picture section there are reviews, backstage with the band photos, etc. www.myspace.com/101434835
It also may be cheaper postage to obtain the book through the British amazon than it is through Phil's site. Go to www.amazon.co.uk and look for Van der Graaf Generator in the 'book' section. Other than that, the price just isn't going to come down even though I wish it could.

25 GBP is 50 USD. Way way too much for a book. Well, maybe not since I do buy video games at that price, haha. That 50 USD doesn't account for the shipping either...

I've been meaning to purchase it, but even though I could probably justify $50 for the book, $25 for shipping is a lot of money.

Welcome to my world, where you can buy anything but must pay almost the same price just for shipping. Without forgeting the taxes that we brazilians have to pay when buyig cds o dvds abroad. Not so obscure why we here in the Third World download so much material from blogs and emule friends... Bought Blackmore's night last album (very more-of-the-same, don't buy it without listening first), Captain Beyond eponymous and The Byrds Untitled, the last two albums that I had in my collection by downloading them. Buy almost $ 40 just for shipping, an had to buy another $ 34 for taxes here in Brazil.
