either one of 2 things...
1. Get Kevin Moore back and have 2 keyboardists (and a guy (Moore) that can write meaningful music)
or
2. Replace Petrucci with Steve Morse, replace Myung with Tony Levin, give LaBrie the boot and leave Portnoy and Rudess so that you have the original LTE as it was meant to be. and if they HAVE to have a singer, get someone who can play something, so they can do something on stage during the instrumental breaks.

ahhh... but at the same time... they are a metal band... the question begs to be asked... aren't they then sort of painted into a sonic corner so to speak. Maybe our PM experts can jump in...just how room do they have to explore without being what they simply are not... they've exhibited.. at least to many of us.. no great talent for songwriting... no real influences outside of the standard prog and metal influences.. can't see them incorporating american folk.. world music into their sound. Maybe simply like any band.. they've taken what the good lord gave them.. and ran the string as far as it would go... and they'll go as far as their fans will keep on buying the same old same old. Someone made the comment about AC/DC doing the same song for 20 years... they don't mind..it makes their fans happy. The fans didn't turn their backs and demand them to do a prog album.. or something different. On the flip side, the fans are happy, but they became a 'joke' to those who aren't fans. Is DT heading down that path.. or have they already been on that path hmmm.. discuss if you feel like it... will be watching to see if anyone runs with this.

I think there is very little wrong with Dream Theater. They are exploring new musical directions, and thats good. I enjoyed Systematic Chaos a lot, despite the cheesiness of some of the lyrics. The only DT albums I have not been completely enamored with are Train of Thought and Falling Into Infinity. If I had the chance to offer them a bit of advice for their next album, I would just suggest a more serious/deep approach to lyrics. Their last three albums have not been anywhere near as impressive lyrically as Mpt2:SFaM, Awake, or Images and Words. That being said, I doubt many of us listen to DT for lyrics. For me, at least, its all about the instruments and overall atmosphere of the music.

Prog Metal, just like any other genre, has its boundaries and rules set up. IMHO, DT has not "ran the string as far as it would go" nor "they'll go as far as their fans will keep on buying the same old same old."
But it really is the case, many DT fans are always expecting a certain sound from them. DT can't exactly make half an album of jazz fusion (for example) and call it prog metal, not that I mind fusion, but DT wont get away with it. Sure Prog Metal has its set rules and boundaries, but at the end of the day, it still leaves enormous room for experimentation, and it's only limited with the artists imagination. But it also a matter if the fans are willing to accept that experimentation and broadening of horizons.
IMO, DT surely can't have run out of ideas, nor do I think they ever will. If I ever felt DT had ever done an AC/DC 20 years of doing the same song, I would have given up on them ages ago. They have plenty of ideas, surely, but it remains to be seen how creatively they can use them . For example, Octavarium in my eyes, the weakest effort from them (excluding When Dream And Day Unite, which i have not heard enough to comment on but im familar with their other studio albums), not because of a lack of ideas, there were certainly plenty, just I think too much of the album made me think "What band I have heard this idea from?" or "Those ideas just didn't seem to flow as well as it could have if they came up with a more interesting part".

I think they should 1. Bring Myung out front! 2. Do something different with the keys. I really dont like Rudess's 'fake guitar solos'. RELAX MAN! more atmosphere. 3. Push back Petrucci a little. 4. The song octavarium really worked (see #2 look it works!) experiment more and play around with different compositions and styles and not so much the ToT vain of metal they have been playing since that album. 5. Their lyrics need work. maybe they could take a creative writing course or poetry class. anything would help really.
They don't have to surrender their style, what makes them DT, to adjust. Their earlier albums did this, they've just stagnated.

They should break up and quit putting out albums that have the lyrics of Led Zeppelin and the music of the Mahvishnu Orchestra....what they are doing has already been done. Lucky I did not have to pay for the cds of theirs I own.

Dream Theater are fine as they are.
Their albums sell by the lorry load to an army of die hard fans the world over. Not many prog metal bands can boast playing huge arenas in 2008. It wont be any concern of theirs that they dont make it into the Prog Archives top 10 or whatever. Their formula is tried and tested and delivers the goods.
Personally, I dont like their music at all, but they are not likely to lose sleep over that either..
I say, all the best to them, just for their contribution to contemporary prog.

I don't know if DT needs anything, other then maybe people getting off their backs, and other people stop pointed at them as the pinnacle of metal. I am a fan. I enjoy there music very much. I think it could be a good thing, if by their popularity, they bring in a whole new host of fans. Who knows, maybe radio stations will start playing them, and then expanding their play lists to include other prog bands, so we wouldn't have to suffer with all the crap that is "popular" now. Wouldn't that be nice...
