Metallica - first, best, and sadly, widely unacknowledged at this juncture in time...

...and don't bother with the "no they're not" responses - I've read them all and they're provably wrong!
The important thing is not to stop questioning.

Prog Metal sure has come a long way and expanded great, so i'll give you a few albums from each end of the spectrum and you could just branch out from there

Ayreon - The Human Equation - This is a brilliant album that is like a metal opera. It is written by one person, Arjen Lucassen and features many singers and players. It is a concept album which is also pretty cool.

Opeth - Blackwater Park - Not there best in my opinion, but a great place to start in their library. I wasn't into death metal growls by anyone including Opeth until I heard this, now i can listen to any death metal band (that is good) . Anyway, great album

Redemption - In the Fullness of Time - This is a straightforward prog metal record. Excellent musicianship and vocals by Ray Alder (Fates Warning)

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime - An excellent album, although i'm not fond of there other stuff. Another well written concept album with great songs.

Dream Theater - Images and Words, Scenes through Train of Thought - Probably my favorite band behind Yes because it was one of the first prog bands I ever heard, but behind them are a lot of 60-70's bands. Any one of these albums are accessible, Images and Words being my favorite.

Devin Townsend Band - Terria - This will explore on end of the Spectrum for you. Devin is a genious and this album is one of his best works. Hard to describe...listen!

Meshuggah - Nothing (REISSUE!!!) - This is another side to explore of prog metal. These guys are very advanced players notably Fredrik Thordendal the guitarist. This album is extremely heavy and has harsh vocals.

Symphony X - V - The above poster said it all. A nice album.

Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane - I like this album the most. So emotional and great songwriting by Daniel. But why not get all the pain of salvation albums recommended!. You won't regret it!

Note: Some of these bands aren't my favorites, some are, i'm just giving you some ideas or where to start. Everybody has there niches and preferences. These albums will give you an idea.

like your list... Im with that, also SHADOW GALLERY!, try into eternity, a newer way of progmetal...

but DT in my top without doubt
I still can't get how Dream Theater music is created by humans

There are the obvious ones (Opeth et al. which I absolutely love) but recently I have been taken and even blown away (which is not something I usually say) by a band I added today to PA - Grayceon (read in their page why and listen to samples on their myspace - http://www.myspace.com/grayceon )

Excellent choices, but I would suggest Perfect Element over Remedy Lane.

This is the order to explore PoS in:

  1. Perfect Element
  2. Remedy Lane
  3. Entropia
  4. One Hour By the Concrete Lake
  5. BE (My favorite album of theirs BUT it's very different because it's not really metal,  more like symphonic prog, with a very pretentious concept)
  6. Scarsick(Disappointment but still good)

As for Opeth, I still haven't heard Orchid, and Deliverance, but for the rest:

  1. Still Life
  2. Blackwater Park
  3. Morningrise
  4. Ghost Reveries
  5. My Arms Your Hearse
  6. Damnation (Not metal at all, beautiful acoustic music)

I really like a lot of the prog metal that is available these days. My favourites are:
  • Opeth
  • Ayreon
  • Star One [ Arjen A Lucassen side project]
  • Dream Theater [specifically "Awake"]
  • Riverside
  • Fates Warning
  • Shadow Gallery
  • Symphony X
  • Rhapsody of Fire
  • Queensryche
  • Tool

Non-prog:

  • Lacuna Coil

  • Kamelot
  • Metallica
  • Stratovarius
  • Katatonia
  • Leaves Eyes

...I think that is about it for the moment Wink

^ IMO Kamelot don't really fit in your non-prog list, especially since you list Rhapsody in the prog department.Wink

^ I wasn't totally serious anyway ... it's an entirely subjective distinction.

^ Yes it is an entirely subjective distinction ... and I know you were not being serious - I admire your vast knowledge of prog metal and appreciate your comments either way - keep up the good work Mike. Big%20smile

Seems there are not a lot of Fates fans here. I suggest  you should hear them, specially A Pleasant Shade of Gray, one of my favourite albums of all time. Kevin Moore and Matheos are excellent composers.

If you do dig into Fates, then I recommend Office of Strategic Influence(OSI). That trademark Matheos riffing is at its best in this band's first album. Moore shines a lot also, makes a slight regression to the early DT days, but maybe because Portnoy is on drums. Though, his style on this band is really different from Dt and LTe.

Iron Maiden is also a great starter. Not prog metal for definition but their style influenced a lot most of the progmetal bands, along with Metallica. Somewhere in Time is my favourite as of now(have not heard Powerslave or Seventh Son). But you should pick the Number ofthe Beast first. A classic and must-have to all metalheads!

What the guys say about Rush is true! The pioneers of the genre could be Fates, Queensryche and Dt, but their parents are Metallica and Maiden( the last being the mom heheWink). BUT the grandfather is RUSH!!

Also, while searching through this site, I found Andromeda. Simply amazed!! The voice is kinda dull, but at least give em a listen in the samples.

I say this as a progmetal amateur though. My suggestions are similar from where I once started not so much ago, after DT of course, he. They are still the best in metal IMHO!
