Oh dear, after giving this band serios due consideration, I now see why some Opeth fans give such poor reviews on most 70's based prog music. Alien afternoon?
How an earth did these guys get included into progressive archives???? Their music is appallingly poor apart from their mellow stuff!!! Now how does one honestly justify Opeth inclusion into this great site and Black Sabbath a no no, when quite clearly Sabbath are light years ahead of this bunch of amateurs? I'd even give a first up to Ozzy Ozbournes music after he gets a full frontal labotomy, hang on he already had one! Get my point.
I respect fully the sites decision on Opeth's inclusion but cannot for the life of me substantiate BS's exclusion from this site.
Great to see Adrian Belew now added, now for David Bedford......................

Don't we already have a thread on the progressiveness of Opeth?
EDIT: Yes we do http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=33613 Edited by progismylife - February 04 2007 at 04:34 |

And now I know why older progressive rock fans (mostly) gave such low ratings to new stuff (like Progressive Metal)

I wonder whether these negative threads really serve any purpose at all but stirring up potential flame wars... I am far from being a Prog-Metal fan, but I'd like to point out that Opeth are included in most major Prog sites, so we're not the only idiots to have such a 'bunch of amateurs' in our database. As to the Black Sabbath issue, it's been already discussed to death - and in any case I don't see any connection between them and Opeth.

![]() i know you're kidding Timur....but as an "older" progressive rock fan, as you put it, i can try to answer your statement -
born in 1953 i've been lucky enough to have seen rock generally develop from a teenage fad to a multinational industry, and embedded as part of every country's culture. there have been many changes and many diverse styles and genres of music over the years, the point is if one studies the history of this development the big picture becomes clear as to why Opeth is a Prog metal band and Black Sabbath is not - and Chris -i am a big fan of Metal/Prog metal, i like Opeth, Dream Theater, and Riverside, they do the old bands proud, and i'm pleased those genres have become a permanent part of the rock scene, they are excellent so i wouldn't give such bands a sour grapes low rating to new stuff !

Clearly i do not have a clue what I am talking about..... Sometimes I struggle with the reasoning behind certain inclusions but I guess I need to accept the majority view that Opeth are indeed something special. I cannot for the life of me understand why but I do have to accept
this view. I will soldier on

The (perceived) quality of the music is irrelevant to whether a band is included or not. We should not deceive ourselves that if something is prog, it automatically has to be good.
Opeth's inclusion was based, like every other band on the site, on the type of music, not the quality.
