OK, I'll do it. Perhaps the moderator has not read the e-mail I sent earlier to the Website's Admins.

Wow, that was quick, the review was there 10 minutes ago!

The moderator Morrissey has posted this:

Thanks for reporting this. Deleted that review and banned him. Fitzcarrlo posted that he Zoolanderhotep plagiarised 11 other reviews of his, could you get him to identify these with links to his own work so I can verify and delete? Thanks, and sorry about this.

Fitz, it seems that Brain Salad Surgery review is no longer there, so I presume the admins have deleted them?

I hope that is the case, as plagiarism is something I'd hate to happen to me.  Luckily I've only written three reviews here, so I believe nobody has plagiarised me.

My Astrid Proll review was used elsewhere (well, a shortened version), but that was by the bass player of the band and he referenced my name and PR anyhow, so I'm happy.

EDIT: it seems the the other reviews are still up though.  I hope this mess gets sorted out.

Tony, I've just read your post about your registering on the site and complaining. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Some may think I'm making a fuss about nothing, but this kid -- and anyone else who plagiarises other people's reviews (or any other work, for that matter) -- should be made aware that it's unethical and that they should not do it.

If I (we) don't complain then such people will just go on plagiarising, ie. stealing, other people's work.

^Yes, Tony. See the seventh post on the first page in this thread for a copy of my e-mail to the Admins of that site. I've also sent the details to M@X and requested him to e-mail them too, but it's up to him whether he does or not.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the punk also ripped off a review by salmacis. I have not checked the rest of this ZoolanderHotept kid's reviews but notice that he has one or two by RUSH too, so perhaps he plagiarised them from Prog Archives too.

The punk even had the gall to pass himself off as me ("Fitzcarraldo aka Zoolanderhotept") on the other site. What a little twerp.

Yes, I tried, but e-mails to the site Admins have been disabled and the only way to contact them would be to register as a user, which I do not want to do if at all possible.

What really annoys me is that this ZoolanderHotept guy has written "Fitzcarraldo aka ZoolanderHotept" as if he and I are one and the same person. He's also submitted reviews of albums that I have not reviewed. Perhaps he copied those reviews from other people too. In any case, I don't want people thinking the other reviews were written by me.

Believe me, I don't feel flattered at all. What a lowlife. The guy is just a lazy cheat.

Of course you can but it's not so easy being that:

  1. The reviews are not copyrighted, even when this could be assumed.
  2. Prog Archives can't sue anybody because the guidelines clearly state that the reviewer is owner of the review.
  3. The legal costs in USA or Canada would be so high that hardly could be afforded.
  4. If you win, the site will simply vanish and the guy will change user.
  5. If you're not the RIAA it's very unlikely you will get a subpoena ordering the IUnternet provider to disclose the information about the user.
  6. Even if you get it, he probably got that nick and web account in an Internet Cafe using a public server that requires no ID.

Simple as that.

Now, I'm not expert in Canadian law, but maybe Prog Archives could force the site to delete the reviews, but again this ghas a cost.

Erik, Iván,

If the sites you quoted are crediting you and/or Prog Archives then I would not classify that as plagiarism, since they are acknowledging that they are not the originators of the reviews.

The reason I am so hopping mad about this ZoolanderHotept kid is that he has just copied my reviews and passed them off as his own. This is pure plagiarism, pure theft of somebody else's review. I just cannot understand how someone can be so shallow and childish as to do that. To actually claim on that site that he wrote them himself beggars belief. I notice that he even copied a spelling mistake I made and later corrected.

i dont think in Fitz's case he would want to remove that, considering that he acknowledge it as his own work...

Funny, I just found this on the website of The Gift:

"Hi one and all We are now on Prog Archives; the biggest progressive resource in the world, and have been given a great review by Erik Neuteboom, one of their most prolific reviewers. He is an advocate.."  LOLLOL

To be serious:

This is the harvest of only a few minutes searching with Google, all these site are using my reviews without my knowledge. And I presume that a lot more sites are doing the same. On one hand it is a bit of an ego-gratification Approve but on the other hand it is a very cheap way to earn money Angry !

http://jrfg.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_jrfg_archive.html (Alsop a couple more of PA members as Australian and Muzikman but at least all credited and with a link to PZ)

www.demonoid.com/files/details/566147/5426554/ - 24k (I can't even read it because it's  aclosed site by invitation but it's in Google)

http://www.cybersmusic.com/cybersearch.php?a=25%20Baroque%20Favorites (About Hamburger Concerto linking it to Prog Archives)

BTW: Nothing vcan be done being that Prog Archives doesn't own the reviews and the owners have not copyrighted, still you can ask for the removal.

Sorry to bang on about this, guys, but I have just seen that the punk has plagiarised the review of GENESIS - Foxtrot on Prog Archives by salmacis.

I have not checked the other ZoolanderHotept reviews to see who he has stolen them from, but it could be from other Prog Archives reviews.

well i guess we have to wait for ivan's advice on this copyright issue... because i guess in the case of commercial oriented usage of noncredited material legal action could be fruitful.

I am so cross with this thief ZoolanderHotept. Look at this exchange of messages on his review page for ELP Works Vol. II on that site:

AlienEater wrote: "how have managed to do so many good elp reviews so quickly?"

ZoolanderHotept wrote: "I didn't write these all this week. I wrote some of them afew weeks ago when my internet connection was down and started posting them as soon as it came back up. The others I had yet to post here but decided to do so when I saw there was only 1 ELP review."

The guy is a liar as well as a thief.

I have not received a reply from the sputnikmusic Web site's Admins to the e-mail I sent complaining, but it is the Festive Season. Perhaps they will reply in a few days.

In any case, I am so annoyed that I registered with the site and posted a comment on each of the 12 reviews of his that I found had ripped of my reviews. Here is what I wrote for ELP - Works Vol. II, for example:

This review was plagiarised from my November 2004 review of Works Vol. II on the Prog Archives Website. I am not ZoolanderHotept, despite him writing "Fitzcarraldo aka Zoolanderhotept" above. I did NOT give him permission to copy my review. And he even had the cheek to claim he wrote them "a few weeks ago when my internet connection was down". He is a fraud. I see he has also plagiarised 11 other reviews of mine.

Fitzcarraldo

Watch you reviews, guys! This thief will rip off your reviews too and claim that he wrote them.

I just hope that the sputnikmusic site does not have anymore thieves for reviewers.

So far I have not noticed that someone copied my reviews from PA, but I did notice that many of my bio and discographies that I wrote for PA appeared on other web sites... notably on a French site called Amarokprog... My feeling is mixed, I am sort of happy that the correct info on certain artists is spread across the net, but... I don't know.
