Experimental/Post rock Appreciation Threa

But as for that new one you threw up there, I think that was the first time I have ever truly disliked a post-rock song I heard.
I'm not sure why, it just didn't do anything for me. maybe it was a little to "pop"...

But look at this thing I wrote in the "Appreciation and Discusion of Post-Rock" thread on the DT boards.

 

"One person I was talking to about Post-rock, and I belive GY!BE in particular, used the adjective Eloquent to describe it. I feel he hit the nail right on the head. PR (great PR anyway) has such a beautiful restraint of itself. It's sole purpose is the mood it creats, and while there are over 1,000 oppurtunities to do really kick ass stuff, great lines, crazy harmonies, beautiful rhythm changes and meter changes, they understand that it would only kill the mood. They understand that this music needs to live on its own, with very little help from its creators. The music takes on living characteristics, and chooses for itself when it need to change or die, or grow, or shrink. And to be able to interpret those needs and wants of the music so perfectly, is teh eloquence that PR musicians have.

What are your thoughts on that. I think its a pretty interesting look at it.

 

I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum! I've got so much vocabulary being rammed into my brain (high school English) that I shouldn't have a problem describing these bands, but I do. I often just say that post-rock is extremely emotional and cinematic music. I wish I could describe it better, but I struggle to pick out words that work best.

 

As a side note, I'm in my fourth year of Spanish, and I'm trying to increase my vocab and grammar there (one of my favorite mistakes made in Spanish was assuming that embarassed translated into 'embarazado' and giving the teacher a chuckle). Somehow I failed to notice you were from Puerto Rico, Chamberry! Your English is a lot better than several folks that I know.

Something I recently realized was that a lot fo Sigur ros isn't in Icelandic. Its kinda the equivilent of him scating of sings lalaladoodoodeedah...

I think thats unbelievbly amazing. It makes the vocals truley act like an instrument, and  (even though for me I can't understand the words anyway) to have lyricless music is great, because you can pay attention to jsut the music and not be bothered by the words you're hearing. but the down fall to that is that vocals are sooo great, so their solution makes it perfect.
