eh, I've written last night, close to the moment of collapsing out of tiresome. I meant actually to write tribal, like I said in the recommendation thread, but hey...

I just went and listened to some Yndi Halda stuff on their myspace.

I just discovered Exposions' large collection of downloadable lives shows! Happy day. You can get to the performances by going to their official site, then to the US fan site (from contacts/links), then to Audio. There are three different sources. The show from the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham, from Internet Archives is amazing.

Have no idea when they will get here, but I will post back. There are videos on the enhanced special edition disk. I've heard (read?) that some of the videos are disturbing... I like dark prog sometimes, but disturbing? I'll get back with my thoughts :-)

The Serpentine Similar (1993)

I've started my Gastr Del Sol journey just like I was recommended not to: through their debut, Serpentine Similar; I sense in it the reasons of "cons disturbing and disarraying", but otherwise I have to say it's GDS in pure form, only, yes, incipiently.

Things are ambivalent. You think you can stand away from the noise, but it actually overwhelsm you; you think you get the point, but you also don't want to do that at all. Out of semantics, it's an unfamiliar instability. Meaning fans will love it, strangers diss it.

Gastr Del Sol, though I still have their last two albums to listen to - so it isn't that fair - are clearly not my favorite band from this condensed world. The parts that please me are exceptional exceptions and that's always, the saddest thing. However they do act quite individual on the rockless experimental subtlety. And that works - just till you want to change the side.

First up: The Serpentine Similar. As I've mentioned, recommended as lame, no rate, still, without Upgrade & Afterlife and Camofleur having been listen, it's the greatest challenge so far. The frightening thing: 2.5. stars!

Short and to the subject, we're used to that and we can accept. But missing colours or too black and white ones are to be discussed.

Speaking of black and white, I do imagine the Gastr Del Sol, of all its music moments and its inspiration as black and white, mono and streamingly screachy. Even their actions look placed in singularity. Their msuci breathes white smoke and drink black ink.

Serpentine Similar. Or a deflagration of sounds. Or a saucerful light in abyssal waters. Or movement down a frozen icycle of one desperate tear. Or art noise being made, but not entirely thinked. Or the experimental of life and form being rule number one, moreover nihilistic too, as every other values are doomed (or out of being able to stand straight). Or some tunes that get stuck in your mind, because they fancy the short impulse and get lucky in being interesting. Or squeezing the void as to get only fractals of acoustic. Or strange charisma. Or a slow guitar revolution. Or music to obscure the living thing out of you.

I'm not convinced by quality, that would be all.

And, by the way, black and white aren't actually colours, but incolours.

The epic does it all.

Simplifyied and accurate: moaning abstract and mass-produced experimental manipulation, "parloand" part okay part making you instinctively say "Efrim, sing for us!", glowing rock when in-used/followed, scraped low profile of a brilliant feather floating upwards...

It wouldn't bite as a listen, but serious people will grow tired of serpentine similarities.
