 Topic: Allow me to introduce myself

Hi, my name it Mike. I am 21 years old. I live in North Carolina and I am not a redneck. I have played the guitar since I was 12. I got into prog music about a year ago through bands like Camel , Yes , and Rush. I already have a collection of over 250 albums. My favorite genre is definately symphonic . My top bands are Yes, Rush, KC, Camel, Nektar, Genesis, and IQ. I like zuehl and fusion and pretty much anything except the metal stuff. I think the day I discovered prog was the day I took the first step in a lifelong musical journey.

I wish. Unfortunately I am a Howe Protege only through his records. Basically I just completely admire his style of playing and wish to absorb some of his playing style by learning all his songs. I didn't realize that I would be implying that I actually know the man. I really wish it was possible though.

Hi,
Sounds like you've had a positive experience with prog. I play(ed) in a band called Protos that has been compared to IQ and Camel by reviewers/fans. I've never heard IQ so I must check them out sometime. The comparison with Camel - and particularly Peter Bardens - was flattering.
It's great that young people are discovering prog in considerable numbers. I hope the trend continues. Do you play in a band now?

I play electric guitar and fill in on bass at my church. I have alot of freedom there to improvise little things because we have a strong lead piano so it's very fun. As far as a rock band, I am really looking forward to that possibility, but I think going to college and other things might get in the way of a full commitment. I've been invited to try things with people, but I feel that my musical passions stray in a much different direction than most musicians my age. For instance, I want to play in a band that is at least proggy and also has no limitations on wierdness or ideas. I'm too idealistic I guess.

You may find the college is the perfect place to hook up with other musicians who are interested in prog. What are you planning to study?

I teach in a business school (Sheffield Hallam University, England), although that is really my second income after consultancy/research work. The writing/music is growing - probably spend about half my time on it now - but it takes a huge amount of music/book sales to make a reasonable living. At the moment, I think of it like growing a tree - just make sure that strong roots are growing in fertile soil and hopefully the tree will keep growing and growing in the years ahead.
"Selling kitchen knives to housewives"?? - that could lead to some interesting exchanges :) Bet there will be a book in that later in your life......
