Best - easily "Birdsongs of the Mesozoic" - great name with some equally inventive album titles. It's such a pity I hate their music!
There are lots of silly band names - too many to narrow down.

Contrary to the topic creator, I think Yes is the ultimate bandname.
Other names I like (I'll keep it to Prog) are Taal, The Mars Volta, Van
der Graaf Generator and Magma. I've never been a big fan of the names
Gentle Giant (I love their music though) and The Flower Kings.

If Roine Stolt had been a native speaker of English, I'm sure he wouldn't have called his band 'The Flower Kings'. It sounds as if he's some sort of baker!

I was never particularly fond of the name 'Yes' either.
My favourite prog band name.. Hmm.. I'd say 'Queensrÿche'
Some other favourites: Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden and Iced Earth.

I've always liked the images "Dream Theater" conjurs.
Flower Kings would be an ok name for a folk prog band I think, but it doesn't suit the band as they are.

Haha. The only thing worse is 'Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe' and their eponymous debut album. Now that sounds like a law firm.

Fortunately Peter's name is good for that too, so get creative!

I'll forgive him, as I just got the original joke. " Dewey, Fleecem & Howe", that's pretty good.

Favourites (best is too controversial a word)
Pain of Salvation Van der Graaf Generator Opeth String Cheese Incident Machine and the Synergetic Nuts Agallloch
Least favourite:
Yes Genesis Pure Reason Revolution Shampoo (a jazz rock fusion band from Belgium in the 1970s) Frost* Marillion Vortex (love the music, but the name lacks originality) The Gift (most bands with "The" in the title annoy me) The Music (not a prog band and not a very good band overall and a very pretentious crappy name to boot) Emerson, Lake and Palmer (most bands that use the band members' names as the titles)

don't mind the old grumps, i'll protect you because you have a beautiful avatar. it seems many people around relate the names to the music, and don't judge in abstracto. for example, i think dream theater is a brilliant name (and brilliant metaphor) and qwaarn is just some kind of primitive quack. but then i may listen to those two bands (i haven't, yet) and then change my mind about the names. a sample of name i don't like: Ther Nice. it's just the perfect name for the band Dave Gahan plays in in the video for "It's No Good", if you know what i mean. still, maybe i'll listen to The Nice and then suddenly like their name. something more interesting in prog: sometimes the names for bands and especially for songs are chosen so ugly/ridiculous/ludicrous, by intention, that one cannot ignore them and gets stuck with them (in a good way). just think of Atomic Rooster - that's ridiculous, but am i glad they've picked it? or check the Brand X song names - "Why Should I Lend You Mine" or "Dance of the Illegal Aliens" - those are just instrumental...
