Not really embarassed but I like some material from bands that many people reject or disdain, like: Beach Boys, Monkees, Simon & Garfunkel, Mamas & Papas, Bread, America, Creedence, Jackson 5, Lovin' Spoonful, Elton John (70s stuff), Midnight Oil, REM, Guns 'N Roses, etc.

For the Brazilian side, the same applies for Taiguara, Ivan Lins, Diana Pequeno, Ednardo, Guilherme Arantes, Belchior, A Cor Do Som, Engenheiros, Raimundos, etc. but not everything they produced.[IMG]height=17 alt=Wink src="http://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif" width=17 align=absMiddle>

Some of your picks are my favorites!!!!:

Mamas and Papas

AND solo Mama Cass Elliot!!!

Monkees

Simon/Garfunkel

I also like:

Olivia Newton John

the "Grease" soundtrack (I KNOW!!  OMG!!)  [IMG]height=17 alt=Embarrassed src="http://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif" width=17 align=absMiddle>

Duran Duran

B52s

Billy Idol

Billy Squire

The B52's are a funny band to listen from time too time.

None -- if I like it, I am not "embarrassed" by it. Stern Smile

Why would I be? Confused

Can I name stuff I like, which I think many or even most here would not like? Yes, I imagine so.

But I am not you -- I am unique.

Differing from the majority (here or elsewhere) does not bother me. I look at the planet, and the average human -- I'm glad to be different.

If you are a prog fan, even a serious music fan, you are in a minority, too.Stern Smile

Yes, I guess that would be!

But I can't stand him or his music -- I've nothing remotely close to that bad in my collection.Approve

What's up up with the Jackson-flaming? I love Mike Embarrassed

You've just had a heavy session of electroshock therapy, and you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks.

No Jackson-flaming from me (though that's a funny phrase)-- I was teasing myself for picking him, and thanking B.B for the concurrance.

It is sad but true that most of the bands discussed on this forum would be considered embarassing on any another music forum. LOL
Likewise bands mentioned in this thread would be the height of good taste to many others.

I would therefore say the most embarassing cd's I own are :-
Genesis - The Lamb
Rush - Hemispheres
Marillion - Script + Misplaced Childhood

I love them, but listen to them alone, as many people  just cannot stomach them.

mini rant.......
Prog has a superiority problem, some prog fans look down on more simpler (but no less worthy) music as being devoid of skill, where as fans of straight rock/pop often laugh at prog for being too twee and too anal and lacking tunes.  Just look at all the different prog classifications, for an 'outsider'  it is crazy.

I enjoy most forms of music, but whilst prog has this 'stigma' attached, it is considered an embarassing and uncool genre.

Bands like Muse and Tool are helping to address the issue. I just hope they continue to draw in new fans.

As Rick Wakeman said "you had to ask for prog in a brown paper bag" (or something like that).

Wink

I used to have to wear a mask and ask the record store clerk to brown bag my Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff and Loretta Lynn albums when I was a kid.  Nowadays, however, the classic country music sound has made a comeback and Johnny and the boys/girls are the height of hip (OK, an exaggeration, but I don't have to wear the Groucho nose anymore).
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

ELO... Billy Joel... I'm actually sort of ashamed of liking Genesis, because I know Supper's Ready is awful but it gets stuck in my head anyway. Um... I actually still have a fondness for Nickelback, even though their songs all sound the same. I'm occasionally embarrassed of my likings for Styx and the Talking Heads. Also, I, uh... like the poppy Yes albums... there, I said it.

I also have occasional ABBA, Don McLean, Duran Duran, Enya and Andrew Lloyd Weber moods, but they're fading as time goes on, thank God.

I'm not ashamed of any of the bands I like but I generally keep quiet about my love of U2 around pretentious prog fans. Wink
