The loudest band I've heard personally was Slovenian punk band Pankrti.

The Sweet at Nottingham Rock City 1980.Horribly loud...couldn't hear a damn thing for 2 days after.
I never saw any band in the seventies but my friend who saw a lot of bands in the late sixties and seventies rates The Nice at Wolverhampton Civic Hall 1968 as the loudest gig he ever witnessed (ahead of even Hawkwind!).

1. Black Sabbath
2. Deep Purple
3. King Crimson - 21 century from "Earthbond" is the loudest and the best for me.

I totally agree with everyone who has cited Motorhead. Seen them twice and only just survived both encounters. At one of the gigs a group of us were shouting LOUDER to see just how far they would go. Lemmy, ever the gentleman, told us to f**k off.
On occasions Hawkwind have been very loud (dependent on their mood)

For me personally it would have to the "lightning Bolt" Concert I went to, I have never been to another concert so noisy and agressive. Seriously about three quarters of the way through the set things really started to get physically painful!

....just to go to the other extreme (and just how much further off topic can one go?..Evil Smile.), the most well-mannered, if not perhaps the quietest, rock concert I went to was also at Hammersmith Odeon. The band was 10cc (post split), and it's the only time I've ever seen everyone in the audience sitting quietly, not standing and shouting, and bestowing polite, but genuinely appreciative, applause at the end of each song. Bizarre, but a good concert nonetheless...

Kiss in their Creatures of the night tour proclaimed themselves as the loudest band.

They were and it hurt my ears, forcing myself and many other to go to the washroom and stuff toilet paper in their ears

Motorhead were loud but not to the point of causing pain.

Probably Sunn0))), Earth or Boris. I heard from an aquaintance of mine who went to a Sunn0))) concert, that your eyes are forced to look upwards due to the vibrations, no way for them to look downwards, and that there were loads of people in the back vomiting profusely.

Sunn0))) isn't a band. They produce oscillating low frequencies that drone seemingly endlessly until their set is over, at which point half the people boo and the other half clap because they're conditioned to do so.

I just saw them at the Fillmore in SF...yeah they're pretty loud but nothing too bad.

I mused to my friend that if I were in that band I would commence to release an album every day of the year for the entireity of my career with them. The thing you could do is have a concept year...an album a day, and then on just one day have an album of incredibly dynamic music.
