(I've been having a tough time posting this so, if it appears five times, please forgive me)
As I was scrolling down the thread, I was so psyched to mention Manowaronly to see that Cygnus beat me to it. Either way, death to false metal!!!!!!!!!!!!! The loudest show I ever ecperienced was Blid Idiot God, around 1994, at CBGB. They must have had 8 cabinets for a really small space. It was like being caught inside a turbine of the Millenium Falcon. Fortunately, it didn't feel bad at all since Andy Hawkins' guitar was so rich harmonically. It was like a Glenn Branca orchestra (who was also immensely loud, but not as loud as B.I.G.) condensed into a power trio. More than any show i've been to, the music was a massive, physical presence in the room, expanding and compressing all of your particles, simultaneously. |

Motorhead are pretty loud, in fact the last time I saw them a few years ago at the Brixton Academy, was easily the loudest gig I have ever been to, I think they got into trouble that night as well for being too load for too long!!!!
My ears were still ringing for the whole of the following day From this very similar thread. http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=19311&KW=loud |

The loudest I ever heard was a Robert Plant gig, I swear I could feel my heart shuddering! |

Robert Fripp wears earplugs, so he doesn't particularly care.
Mystic Fred is correct: the Guinness Book lists Deep Purple as the loudest band ever in concert: they were measured at 132 decibels - louder than a jet plane at take-off when standing 30 feet away.
I saw Led Zeppelin: they were not overly loud. Just loud enough...LOL
Peace.

The only concert where I walked out of with ears ringing was a show in 1978 Foghat and Thin Lizzy. Foghat was loud it was just a din you couldn't distinguish anything. Thin Lizzy was loud but not that loud. I had to leave as it was actually painful. I was there to see TL anyway Gary Moore was playing with them.

Led Zeppelin 1979, my head was buzzing for two days and Rush 2005, it's one of my favorite bands but I went to the toilet a few extra times to escape from the 100 plus decibels, aweful and a disgrace to such a band ...

Garion:
I saw Foghat and Thin Lizzy on that same tour as well. I had the same reaction to Foghat. They played about an hour and I still don't know how many songs they played because it all ran together. |

Exactly there was no guitar, bass, drums or vocals it was just a din. Totally awful. TL smoked though.

You guys are forgetting a lot of major bands. Sunn O))) are frighteningly loud, I refused to go to their concerts because of the horror stories I heard. (They play so loud that you crap your pants, literally no joke) Another band that was way loud was the Swans (the police shut down many of their concerts because it was a health hazard.)
Sleep and their guitarist Matt Pike's next band (High On Fire) are both insanely loud.
And of course you have the classic example of Motorhead. Edited by lightbulb_son - August 15 2006 at 21:50 |

I used to own a SUNN 0))) amplifier. That was the name of the company ND the Logo. Last I heard Fender had bought them out. I wonder if the band has the permissin to use both name and logo. It was a fairly major brand name in the late 60's and early 70's. Not particulaly loud though.

Yeah post-rock and "wall of sound" shoegazer bands can get really loud. I've seen tons of metal bands, but the loudest concert I've been to was Mono. They can build a song from almost silence to the most deafening clamour. The guitars have so many looped layers the sound is literally more punishing than any metal band could ever be. |

Actually, the theory isn't that they play so loud that you
defecate, but so low. It's called the theory of the "brown note"
and has never been proven or extensively documented.

Hey I used to make a similar joke about VanHalen 25 years ago when Eddie was getting gobs of attention for his guitar tone. At the time the rock press was calling it the "brown sound". Not being a big fan (and given the subject of the previous post) you can imagine how I interpreted that.

In loudest do you mean heaviest ?
In that case, some extreme Black Metal would win: the haviest that come to my mind are Cryptopsy, Belphegor and Anaal Nathrak, but are a lot out there.

no, they dont mean that, and Suffocation is "louder" than Cryptopsy, although Cryptopsy's drummer is freaking unbelievable. |
