Topic: Female Vocal Specialist? Posted: July 28 2006 at 16:39 |
I have noticed many progressive rock fans maintain an unending interest in female fronted prog bands and progressive rock groups with female vocals (i.e. The Gathering, Curved Air, Mostly Autmn, ect...). I think this position on PA would provide prog fans with ample information regarding talented bands with female vocals. Perhaps, A Top 100 list should added highlighting the most pivotal prog albums with female vocals ( Ashes Are Burning, Phantasmagoria, Last Bright Light, Souvenirs, In Praise of Learning (Dagmar Krause) only one album, but still, ect...).
This link is an overview of interest already apparent on PA regarding female fronted prog bands and progressive rock outfits with female vocals.

Yes it is, I love them. Loveless is one of the best albums from the 90s IMO. Isn't Anything has its moments as well.

I wholly agree, Loveless possesses even some prog qualities, if you think about it.

Female vocal albums are my specialism. I believe I own practically every female vocal progressive, psychedelic and acid-folk album ever made, anywhere in the world.

That's quite a statement, you must have a very large collection.

Talking of Curved Air, I prefer "Air Cut" to "Phantasmagoria", but that's beside the point. Personally, I like female vocalists (and I've loved to be one myself, though I'm a very deep alto and no soprano), but I still wonder why they have to privilege form (i.e. physical attractiveness) over content (i.e. musical credibility). I like looking at handsome men myself, but I'm not interested in seeing Brad Pitt front a band (and I don't fancy Brad that much either ) - especially if he cannot sing. Just my two cents, though...

Most prog rock fans are men. And most men are sexist.

Yes, I do like a sweeping generalisation now and again!
But if you look at some of the threads on female musicians on this site, I think it's defensible. I've seen several "who's the nicest piece of eye candy in prog" or "who'd make the cutest all-female prog band"-type threads. Much as I like attractive young ladies myself, I find those sorts of threads very disrespectful to the hundreds of talented female musicians in progressive rock.
