Hello fellow beer freaks!

I just read an article in my favorite Dutch beer magazine PINT, it's about the World Beer Cup, one time in two years, this year in Seattle (USA) in April 2006.

A few facts: 2221 beers, 540 breweries and 46 countries.

About the winners:
USA 11% of the medailles
Germany 15% of the medailles
Belgium 22% of the medailles

Some examples of the winners:

Belgium Style Dubbel:
GOLD for the Chicago Brewing Co. with C.B.C. Belgian Style Dubbel

Belgium Style Triple:
GOLD for the Michigan Dragonmead Microbrewery with Final Absolution Trippel
SILVER for brewery Affligem with Affigem Tripel
BRONZE for brewery Het Anker with Gouden Carolus Tripel

German Style Doppelbock:
GOLD for Dark Doppelbock (Wisconsin)
SILVER for Ijsbock (SNAB)
BRONZE for Red Cock Doppelbock (Hawaii)

German Style Pilsener:
GOLD for Trumer Pils (California)

In the categories Altbier, Barley-wine, Scottish style ale and Classic English style Pale Ale the USA breweries were the winners!
The jury (110 from 18 countries) had to taste 60-70 beers each day between 0900AM-0500PM!

Perhaps an idea for some Prog Archives to join this event next time (San Diego 2008 Wink ?

I'll keep my eyes out for those... we have some good import shops in Raleigh.

I'm sure erik knows this, but other non-USians should take note of this:  just because mass-market garbage like Bud et. al exists, doesn't mean Americans are beer ignorami.  We can and do appreciate the fine stuff, and can make a pretty decent brew as evidenced above.
