Here's something for you to download. Extreme freejazz noise punk with yelling and growling. Reminds me a bit of John Zorn. It's free and legal. http://koti.welho.com/mniemenm/hetskel/ and here's some other crazy stuff. http://www.deepturtle.net/tulipes1.html#tuli02

I've been noticing the reviews on the main page in the last couple days and there are a lot more reviews for bands with only a couple to no previous reviews! So it looks like people are starting to add to the site in a broader way. Not just Flower Kings, Genesis, Mars Volta and Dream Theater reviews! :)

I agree David ! I am happy with this turn of events, and I find many interesting reviews about albums new to me.
For now, I will stop with the 25 list I posted in the previous pages, I will mention it again from time to time aling with other stuff I don't know so we can all together discover and help others discover new music.
I want to recommend one album I received recently:
The band: TRESPASS (IS) from Israel who released the album In Haze of Time in 2002
Symphonic prog, with flashy tendencies and some cheesy notes but the msuic itself is cheerful and enjoyable. The music is moderately complex, beautiful and fun to listen to. The musicianship is good, there is no denying, but I feel as if something was lost between the playing in the studio and the recording process. As if they should sound better - probably just a production issue, and not the band's muscianship fault. The Israeli accent of the vocalist is quite noticeable but not a problem to these ears, but they shuold seek someone else to fill this sopt IMHO. The keyboards are definitely the band's strong side. There are influences of the keyboards elements of ELP (which some may regard as being pompous) and the Genesis sound. There is also a classical music feeling to some of the tracks, as if they bring in their classical music training into their compositions (and there is of course the last track - Mad House BLues with a classic tune in it...). This is a good album and I believe that they will improve with their followup, if they will release it.

Just my two-pence about Trespass: I generally agree with what avestin's said, but like to stress out that they would be so much better without singing at all. The only track where vocals are bearable for me is their title track on this album - otherwise singer just spoils the charm of very good music IMO.

Having fun, are we Rorro?
I have so many albums I want to recommend here, and I don't know which to choose and start with.
I'll pick only one for this time.
The band is the Dutch ALQUIN. The albums I will be refering to are Marks from 1972 and Mountain Queen from 1973.
It is perhapse not prog per se (hence the Art Rock classification) but it does have its progressive traits.
I hear some classic rock with some Jazz and the additional proggy elements which give it its special sound, that seperates it from your regular 70's rock. The first album is more eclectic in terms of genres introduced into the songs. The second album is an improvement and shows them getting more sophisticated, composing music driven by guitar, Hammond and saxes. Production in both albums is not the strong point of these releases. But the musicianship is good and can be appreciated nonetheless.
Overall, two good art rock albums with more than just plain rock and jam. Both are worth listening to, but if one must choose, then Mountain Queen would be my recommendation.
Enjoy,
Assaf

I followed BaldFriede's recommendation for Sea Shanties by High Tide and I must say I am glad I listened to her. It is a great album, and it too has this sound on it which make the listener surprised to discover it is from 1969 and not later. Too bad the production is of poor quality.

I recommend at the moment an old band called Screaming Headless Torsos...
If you like funk, and particularly the brand of funk (or is that pseudo-funk?) Mr. Bungle brought to the forefront during California, you should definitely check these guys out. |
