Well, I can't really place the following band. It's got an Opeth-kind'a
feeling to it, but it's not as heavy, and it has got some more
sensitive parts.....
I suck at these descriptions, so I think you'll just have to listen to the mp's on their site. Subterranean Masquerade I'm absolutely gonna buy the album and particularly like 'Six strings to cover fear' The site hasn't been updated since about a year, and I haven't got a clue on what's happening right now with the band.... If anybody has any news or something? |

Amazing group! Have you noticed how every Agalloch-related collective has something new and unusual to offer to the intellectual progmetal fan? Agalloch, Sculptured, Subterranean Masquerade, even Especially Likely Sloth... are all excellent groups°. I would not really compare Submasq to Opeth though. They don't sound like any of their vast influences. -- Ivan |

Last weekend I listened to the new Katatonia album ... it reminded me of Opeth. It's very good - not as progressive as Opeth, but also amazing! |

Excellent group. I recently recommended them here in PA. Their EP Temporary Psychotic State is also worthwhile. Two excellent songs. they also did two cover versions. One for Dead Can Dance and the pther for Peter Murphy (Cuts you up) - also very good ones. |

Ok, you're obviously more into this kind of music than I am. Thanks for the mentioning of names, am going to look for more info about them. And I compared them to Opeth because that's my only frame of reference. I'm not (yet) really into these kinds of music. |

I performed the search on Submasq but couldn't find any topics. Sorry for that! I read a (Dutch) review of their EP which tempted me to listen to the songs from their website. It thrills me to know their EP as well as their CD is pretty easy to get a hold of here in Holland. It's next on my list of things to buy. |

I also happen to find that later Katatonia comes with an Opeth influence, as well Tool and maybe Porcupine Tree. They're not much of a Progressive Metal group but I enjoy them on creative and emotional levels. The Great Cold Distance is a good release, still growing on me, but I prefer Viva Emptiness a lot more. My favourite albums of theirs will always be the Doom/Death stuff though. I especially enjoy the track Without God from the debut. Such emotion! -- Ivan |

Don't feel intimidated, people always have to start somewhere. I suppose you've already heard (of) Agalloch, the amazingly talented group that take emotion and music to a completely new level. They have a new album coming out this year. You could check my review on Pale Folklore written for this website, although I'm not very fond of it. Sculptured is a disbanded American Melodic Death Metal group with Un-Metal various elements implemented into their sound, including different instruments. Very musical, if you like Submasq, I suppose you'll like them too. Get their first full-length, it is more accessible and less weird than Apollo Ends. Sculptured aren't on the archives yet though. I'd gladly upload them myself, but it seems that the Progmetal team(no offense, guys)isn't as fast and energetic these days as they used to be. Especially Likely Sloth is the craziest thing ever, the project of Agalloch's basisst - consists of crazy avant-garde keyboard compositions(closest comparison being Mr. Bungle and John Zorn)with a freaking TEN YEAR OLD as the "group"'s singer. Not really recommended, but it is not completely useless to know how far people take their music. -- Ivan |

I've heard about the name, but that's it actually. Djeez, it's my first day here, and I've got a lot of 'essential reading' to do. I'm absolutely putting this one on that list.
I'm not really into the avant-garde music... I've listened to Zorn a couple of times, and it blew me away from my stereo, in a negative way. But a 10-year old as a singer is a nice subject for a conversation with my friends, while enjoying a cold one and talking about music! Edited by Man Made God |

You're welcome, let us know what you think of the SubMasq! Yesterday I've ordered the cd online. The store said it would take approximately 2 weeks before they will be able to send it to me. If they're timing's allright, I can enjoy Johnny Cash's Live at Folsom Prison in the meantime, which would take approximately 1 week |

The vocals ruin this for me. I think some of the string applications are pretty cool. The melodic segments of music are nice as well. I don't see why they use the growls though. It is unfitting and it certainly does nothing to edify the song. A lot of melodic (often doom) metal bands ruin their music with those growls. I see that it is creative music, but I can't bring myself to enjoy it.

Ah yes, that's one of their best quality's if you ask me. Those are exactly the contrasts I look for in music. That's probably one of the main reasons I love Opeth as much as I do. Allthough they are far more agressive. |

The contrast in Opeth is effective. I don't think Subterranean Masquerade's contrast is. I think it takes away from the concurrent melodies and such. |
