Topic: Yes The Ladder Posted: February 25 2006 at 08:55 |
What does everyone think of this album? (Please no dark sarcasm from the guys who only accept 70īs Yes, Try focus on The Ladder only and donīt compare it to Relayer etc, itīs another time and a different sound)
For all of those who could never get into Yes I think this album should be your first, a sort of gateway into this music. I used to really dislike Yes, mainly the vocals, but after listening to this album 5 times in the last 2 days it has quickly become one of my favourites. To really get into it it is worth listening to on headphones with the volume turned up.
I think itīs an incredible, uplifting and adventurous masterpiece!! Viva The Ladder!!

It's a good album, but not quite as good as their 70's albums.

Did you not see what he said!! Nevermind.
I'm a big Yes fan, But actually never heard 'The Ladder', 'Magnification' on the other hand, That's a very very very good record.

What year did Magnification come out? Reckon I willl try that next. I really enjoyed the upbeat sound of The Ladder.

Couple of years after 'The Ladder', I'd imagine it's similar in some way. Read my review if you like. I was happy with that one

I bought "The Ladder" for my girlfriend after we went to see Yes live during their "Ladder"-tour. The concert was one of the best experiences I ever made with Yes combining their newer material with older favourites - it was pure magic! The girlfriend has long ago left me, but the happy memories still linger. But other than DrKnow I wouldn't recommend to listen to "The Ladder" with your headphones on as I think you should (if possible) turn up the volume real loud and you don't want to f*** up your hearing, do you? So go out and get it, send your family away, sedate your neighbours, put it on and play it LOUD! Enjoy!!

The Ladder is a mediocre album. Not bad. Magnification is much better.
These are the only two albums other than the 70s material that I like.

But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion

I also want to get Live at the house of bliues where they did stuff from The Ladder and also had their old songs. I listen to all my music on the headphones so I can hear all the instruments clearly. Itīs great to hear a guitar come out one speaker and shift to the other.

Other than the excellant Homeworld I find the rest of The Ladder to be
mediocre at best, sometimes even trite. I find Magnification to be an
overall better and more consistent effort.

I think it was by far their best since 'Going For The One'. It harks more back to 'Fragile' though with its 'We Have Heaven' style refrain at one point. Indeed, a few tracks are genuine Yes classics though- 'Homeworld', 'New Language', 'Face To Face'- and most of the others fused the prog with the AOR years wonderfully, resulting in one of their best albums in my opinion.
Conversely, I still find 'Magnification' to be a disappointment thus far. I don't really hear why people praise it so much as yet....

I wouldn't call it a disappointment but I don't shower praise on it
either hhahahah. It was a good album.... supported by an
incredible tour.. that's for sure.
I was thinking about this earlier.. if not for the Sept 11 connection I might have made a joke thread out of it..
Yes's last two studio releases... cursed possibly?...
The Ladder.. produced by top album producer Bruce Fairbairn ... who dies not long after the album is comleted I believe.
Magnification... thought by the group to be a great return for the new
decade... drops like a stone without any fanfare.. when it's release
date is obvioiusly overshadowed by the Sept. 11 attacks. Remember
talking with some Yes fans who were so jazzed up and ready to embrace
the new Yes release and understandably lost all interest in the
album. I know I didn't make it to the store that day to get
it.....
