I think he should be added in under art-rock or prog related, I've never heard anything that sounds like his solo stuff ever before. It is definitely psychedelic and very unconventional to say the least. CHeck him out

It's all right. I don't think it's prog, but it is not bad.

"Shadows colide with people" is the only solo album from him I've heard, and it clearly sounded similar (although still quite original) to several bands and artist cathegorized as Post-Rock/Experimental. |

As a guitarist, John has a nice tone, even at it thrashy, I would prefer to listen to his guitar playing over David Navarro. John is also quite knowledgable when it comes to music, he is a big Progressive rock fan and listed Fripp and Howe as two of his major influences... And also loves Hackett, Karoli and Holdsworth as well.

I interviewed JF for the Van der Graaf Generator book I co-wrote. He was great (he's an extremely knowledgeable VdGG fan). He told me about the Mars Volta album he was on (I haven't heard it - "Deloused [something or other]") and he said there's a part where he and Omar play duel leads together and it reminded JF of the VdGG tune "Emperor in his War Room", where Fripp guests playing two leads simultaneously (well, not really but it sounds that way with overdubbing). JF also said he brought it up to Omar and he knew exactly the track that John was referring to.
