I guiess this thread soon will be moved to the Non Prog Polls section.

You forgot ELVIS PRESLEY : "the truck-driver who invented rock" ;

He recorded in the famous MEMPHIS RECORDING SERVICE (SUN RECORDS) "THAT'S ALL RIGHT" (a blues song written and recorded by ARTHUR CRUDUP in 1947) and "BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY" ( a remake of BILL MONROE 's waltz).

This happened in july the 5th 1954.

Most rock seems to be based on either Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd or the Beatles

^ They aren't that influential, by the way.

The Beatles, no doubt about it

 I voted for the Beatles but think you'd have to include The Velvet Underground as a huge iinfluence.

You are right, of course, I can definately here The Beatles influence on the 1st Black Sabbath Album. . Am I right in thinking Jimi Hendrix was also influenced by The Beatles?

Call that an argument?
That was never an argument.

Voted for The Beatles because... well... duh.  But I honestly think that Pink Floyd has influenced more creative ideas and more Prog bands were probably modeled after Floyd than the Beatles.  However... everyone and his brother has had some dumbass musical thought in his head that somehow was inspired by Revolver or Rubber Soul.  Definately gotta give mad props to The Beatles.

Beatles revolutionalized the music industry. Everywhere from how an ablum is made and produced, to the writing its self. Pop, Rock and Roll, Prog, they hit it all
I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

You can hear Chris Squire in Paul's bass playing, you can hear Gentle Giant and Yes in their vocal harmonies, you can hear Gentle Giant (especially "The Edge of Twilight") in "Because", you can even hear Captain Beefheart in the two-part guitar harmonies sometimes. The Beatles popularized the mellotron with "Strawberry Fields Forever", epics with "A Day in the Life", concept albums with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts", odd time signatures with such things as "Happiness is a Warm Gun", "Strawberry Fields", "Within You, Without You", "Good Morning", and song suites with the B-side of Abbey Road. Well, by Abbey Road other epics had already appeared, so that's probably less influential. Others may have beat the Beatles in all of these categories, but only the Beatles use of them was influential. Any and all prog rockers of the 70s quote the Beatles...Roger Waters, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Peter Gabriel...

In fact, the Beatles still hold direct influence today. Radiohead was quoted as saying their epic "Paranoid Android" was inspired by "Happiness is a warm Gun"

Its completly ridiculous that Jethro Tull would be compared to The Beatles in terms of 'which is more influential'... The Beatles all the way.

My vote goes to Jethro Tull though... Only because I found it so ridiculous that they are on this list that I had to vote for them.. Dont know why...
