Hellow everybody

As a matter of fact, i do not interest in progressive metal very much. it is not my cup of tea. all those distortion guitars all the time, you know...

but i would like to try just ONE prog- metal album, only one band.

which album and band do you recommend?

i've listen to dream theatre - didnt like it. I've listen to tool - quite impressed. BUT i heard two tracks from the LATERALUS album - they looked quite similar to each other.

SO shall i try another band/album, or shall i try TOOL?

what are your recommandation for me, progressive-metal heads?

Why don't you give us some more clues about your taste ... I can't make a recommendation when I don't know what your favorite (non-metal) prog bands are.

BTW: Browse my audio link database (search for metal) ... MANY samples to try. I recommend Pain of Salvation, you definitely can't go wrong with them.

Edit: BTW: The proper forum category would be Recommendations ... perhaps an admin could move it there?

I would try Aenima by Tool first(it is their first truly progressive album),then give Laterlaus repeated listens(the album is a masterpiece,it's hard to gauge how much you will like an album if you only heard 2 tracks).

Try THERION's "Theli" or "Vovin" albums. Very different kind of
progressive metal to DREAM THEATER - these albums have strong
classical influences, huge orchestrations and epic choral vocals. You will
either love them or hate them.

ok, THEORION seems a good recommandation. I'll check it along with the other ones.

my taste is quite "the ususal progressive one" - all the great groups from the 70's - GENESIS, YES, GENTLE GIANT etc... (these are the first 3 )

I wish the admin could pass me from the "bugs" to "recommandation", it opened here by mistake. i feel very isolated here

thank you all

I love bands that combine Classical and Metal ... and I truly HATE Therion.

Try Rhapsody instead ... unless you mind a singer with a strong italian accent.

Hmm... you don't like distorted guitars? It's going to be tought to find you a prog metal band then!

Ok, so you like GENESIS, YES, GENTLE GIANT. If you haven't tried it, I'd recommend Spock's Beard, say the V album. It's actually labelled under symphonic prog here on progarchives, but maybe it'll warm you up to metal style distorted guitars while keeping to a similar musical style that you're used to. Then jump right to any prog-metal band, listen to some audio samples here on progarchives, and you might find something that moves you. There's a HUGE difference between different prog metal bands, the genre fits almost anything, so you should't turn away after the first dissapointment!

Good Luck!
Currently listening to:
- Andromeda
- Pagan's Mind
- Kamelot

If you don't like heavy distorted guitars you'll probably won't like death metal screams that much..

If you are interested in jazzy metal w\ chick vocals check out Aghora - Aghora.

You seem to like Thinking Plague so the next step might be avant-prog-metal, you could listen to Mr. Bungle, Fantomas and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

If you don't like progressive metal that much there are a few directions i think you can go.

The first and most logical direction i see is going with bands that combine more progressive rock elements with progressive metal.  I think Pain Of Salvation's BE is the best example of this.  BE has some very hard songs, but even within those songs they have great soft parts.  They make great use of the orchestra too.  This album has a lot of things that both progressive metal and rock fans can enjoy.

Of course you've heard Dream Theater, but Images and Words and Scenes From A Memory have some songs that many different fans of progressive music can enjoy.  Ok, maybe you won't like how Home is a heavy song, but i think you could still enjoy a song like Finally Free, The Spirit Carries On, Learning To Live, and Another Day.

The other logical route you could go in is Ayreon.  Ayreon isn't as much about the distorted guitars.  Ayreon is considered to be very synth based.  Arjen Lucassen is the mastermind of this project, and he's worked with some great progressive metal vocalists like James LaBrie, Damion Wilson, and well Russell Allen if you consider him great, and also some great progressive rock vocalists like Fish and Neal Morse.  Ayreon combines a lot of genres into this project.  I wouldn't reccomend Universal Migrator because of the second disc being completely metal, but i think you could enjoy Into the Electric Caste and The Human Equation.

To Threadstarter:

What did you hear from Dream Theater? And what two Tool songs did you hear also?

^ NO!

That would scare a Prog fan into hiding in a room and I don't think a Prog fan would take Russell Allen's vocals on that album very kindly either...
