COLLEGIUM MUSICUM Collegium Musicum Live progressive rock album and reviews Symphonic Prog
(Live, 1973)
COLLEGIUM MUSICUM "Collegium Musicum Live "
Review (Permanent link) by Jan Vlček @ 8:06:44 PM EST, 10/3/2005
5 stars   All Collegium Musicum music - records and concerts - is/was excellent, breakthrough, unprecedented and unique alloy of rock and classical music, fruit of Varga's brilliant and inventive mind. During the "dark age" one of few light points in state controlled culture. Marian Varga is one of great spirits - victims of communism. This live album is the best of all CM recordings. Unfortunately I can give only 5 stars, this LP deserves at least 10!!!

See how easy it is to make reviews? You just type in some inepsies and then copy the whole thing to the whole catalog of that band.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND THE MAGIC BAND Trout Mask Replica progressive rock album and reviews RIO/Avant-Prog
(Studio Album, 1969)
CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (AND THE MAGIC BAND) "Trout Mask Replica"
Review (Permanent link) by Ant Man Bee @ 8:08:51 PM EST, 10/3/2005
5 stars   Just as there are people who think Picasso didn't know how to draw (myself included, until I took a look at some of Picasso's early sketches years ago and realized that he did know), there will no doubt be people who think Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band can't play music. I dare those people to pick up a guitar and TRY to play any of the songs on "Trout Mask Replica" note for note. Of course, jokesters will take up the dare, making random noise and atonal squawks, but once you realize that the music on "Trout Mask" was INTENTIONALLY written in this manner, even the most spiteful cretin will simply have to shut the f**k up and realize that Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band are superior artists who successfully created Cubist music out of the remains of free jazz, Delta blues, and Imagist poetry.

Cubism is the art movement that Picasso popularized, and it had to do with viewing multi-dimensional perspectives simultaneously. Thus, Picasso's Cubist figures have 3/4 profile eyeballs on the sides of their heads, almost the way Egyptian hieroglyphs distort the eyes when drawing profiles. The musical equivalent would be to have three or four different instrument parts (in different meters and styles) competing in the same linear space of one song-- kind of like being in a parking lot before a concert and hearing the stereos of several cars mixing together to create a new, bastardized version... which is what The Flaming Lips did on their album "Zaireeka".

The fact that The Lips get applause for this move while Beefheart remains relatively obscure underscores a uniquely American trait: giving credit for originality not to the originators but to the imitators. I like The Flaming Lips, but knowing that "Trout Mask Replica" did it three decades earlier only makes me like Beefheart's music even more. It was the most original American music made prior to the "invention" of rap music, but because rap is all about "the beat" it has a wider appeal. However, everyone from Tom Waits to The Butthole Surfers to Devo to The Minutemen owe Beefheart a huge debt.

This album is perfect in my estimation, but many will disagree.

DREAM THEATER Falling To Infinity
Review (Permanent link) by bogdan @ 9:55:12 AM EST, 3/31/2004

4 stars  —  My favourite DR album. This is a prog album with jazz influences. The keyboards are very intelligent. All DR albums are special but this is close to my heart. Some people dont like this album cause it didnt sounded like Images And Words or Awake. well each one of us has their own taste in music."Trial of tears" are a prog masterpice.

DREAM THEATER Falling To Infinity
Review (Permanent link) by scott @ 5:34:07 PM EST, 9/8/2005

3 stars  —  An intresting album with some really posotive qualities, and some not... This is due to two things; a nazi-like record company who would not let them do everytihng they wanted to( the shortened songs, pushed for a more radio freindly song, and was too controlling on everything else) and their attepmt at another sound that wasnt up to their standards. A great opener and a great closer, but some weak songs in the middle. However, this album has a very orignal sound where you can barely hear any influence form any band, unlike their other albums

DREAM THEATER A Change Of Seasons
Review (Permanent link) by AngelFiend @ 3:47:07 AM EST, 2/25/2004

4 stars  —  Wow! This song was written to be in "Images And Words" but at the last time they didn't record it... What a pity! This EP is a good EP, but only for the 3 first songs, if they recorded the songs from the medlyes in their integral version I would put a 5 stars rating!

5 stars  —  I like this one specially cos its a bit dark. Lots of personal favourites on this one. The album is well-balanced too. You have the metal of The Mirror and Lie, relaxing songs (Silent man, Space dyevest, Lifting shadows), and epical pieces (Scarred, Voices). a perfect album

Review (Permanent link) by Leandro Del Prete @ 11:51:33 AM EST, 4/27/2004

5 stars  —  A great album for a great band. "A mind beside itself" could explain what I'm saying. The heavy guitars of "Lie" and "The Mirror" can make me kick any ass on the street, while "Voices" and "The Silent Man" can make me cry like a child. Lift the shadows off your dreams listening to this masterpiece (like all DT albums).

DREAM THEATER Awake
Review (Permanent link) by Progfrog @ 7:59:08 PM EST, 7/24/2004

1 stars  —  DT is a band that would be the greatest of them all if they only knew how to write songs. Impeccable playing, huge solos, lush production and astonishingly empty, basic, sometimes nothing but hilariously tasteless (Space- Dye Vest) music beneath all that flash.

4 stars  —  After the slightly overrated Images And Words comes this very impressive 75 minute slice of prog metal. The sound and playing is spot on.The songs are solid and LaBrie's singing just about manages not to overtake the whole thing.I have to deduct a point because as a matter of taste I prefer Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, but this is worth checking out for sure.

5 stars  —  "Headline: Dream Theater strikes again!"( wow, that was corney...) This album takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that has everything form intence metal, 90's rock, classic rock, classic prog, epic, spacey prog, and a dark piano based song. Everything dripping wiht that classic DreamTheater intricicy and talent. A great album with an amazing flow. Essential for any progger

DREAM THEATER Awake
Review (Permanent link) by Mr.Joepeck @ 5:04:57 PM EST, 9/16/2005

5 stars  —  To a lot of die hard DT fans, such as myself, Awake is credited as being an edgier version of Images and Words with perhaps JLB's best vocal performance. Even though this is one of DT's best it will take some repeated listens. The high production value on this album gives it a crisp sound that seems to never be outdated, like Images and Words. So pick this one up and listen to it many, many times.

I don't see any reason to report these reviews as inappropriate

maybe it are not the best of reviews, but that doesn't make the opinions of the reviewers less valid.

Maybe you're right, Tuxon. Maybe I'm being a little too harsh.

1 stars  —  All I can state in addition to these mostly imbecilic comments is that I am confused and cannot believe that even people who like something much better than those stuff MTV (Music That's Vapid as I named them) serves are incapable of distinguishing intelligent from unintelligent music. They can't tell the difference between acceptable and good. Therefore they can't rate anything! This release is quite stupid but I rated it with one star only because even those monsters from MTV and some others, altogether mass brain washers such as Beyonce, Eminem, Hives, Cradle of Filth, Justin Timberlake, Ceca :o) and others exist. Anyhow, these guys shouldn't be physically eliminated, just banned to play together anytime, anymore, anywhere. Art is not only about mathematics and folk, get it? And sorry if my English is not too good, I lived my whole life in Serbia.

1 stars  —  To all prog-metal (old Dream Theater, Symphony X, Vanden Plas, Magellan, Treshold) fanatics: This is a progressive metal masterpiece! Cheesy in the extreme!! Idiotic concept!! Endless guitar & keyboards masturbation!! Screeming, high-pitched vocals!! Hair-metal melodies!! Circus atmosphere!! Name of the band is one of the most pretencious and stupid in the history of rock music!! We've got real festival of instruments here: they used probably almost everything manking ever invented!! Well, I'm sure you will go absolutely crazy over this one!! :D (sorry if it sounds offensive, I'm just in the bad mood :) Rest of the world: don't take even for free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe many people here think just the same way, but it should be very carefully concidered, how to define exactly the characteristics of abuse-reviews and honest opinnions.

Like for example, somebody has given one-star reviews for whole LANDBERK discography, including rarer singles and a Italian-only club release. If he/she hated some album, it's okay IMO to give one star to it, but at least some of the one-starers in the whole discography are very possibly just hate-reviewing. But how can I prove it? And I don't want to start throwing rocks upon anybody from these actions, as they are very human...
