In Finland we have even two books of misheard lyrics - are such in other countries? I laugh my eyes wet reading them. I try to memorize some English-language examples (I bring the best tomorrow)... "All I needed was to love you gay" ("...the love you gave"; Only You) As a young boy I heard Peter Gabriel's line "out of woman comes a man" in Humdrum as "I want woman, condom and...". Not that I THOUGHT it was that way really... |

"Woke up this morning, bucked up and I leave me.
Darling, cheesehead, I was yards to greasy. Ohhhh-ho, me ears are alight". "I think that's what he sings, but I need to hear it on a Maxwell." That was a German tv-ad for Maxwell tapes in the 80s. Let's see if you can guess the song. |

One famous mishearing is in Manfred Mann's Earth Band's Blinded by the light, "ripped up like a douche" (misheard) >< "revved up like a deuce" (right words). This was talked about in Mann's interview: a detail that possibly helped the single (and Roaring Silence album) sell so well. Eh, my English is not good enough to understand either of them properly, what sort of naughtiness is there, can someone enlighten me? I found this text below in the net: http://www.izzlepfaff.com/blog/archives/000119.php " I can't believe the biggest Mondegreen song of all time has not been mentioned. It was even a Skit on The State. The song? Blinded by the Light. Some variations: "Blinded by the light, held up like a luffe by the foreman of the night." The funny thing is, I had to go to a lyrics site to get the original: |

and how do you know they are the original lyrics? on the official homepage of Hawkwind there is a mistake about the lyrics of "High Rise". one line is given as "Caged up rage, swarming all the time", but Robert Calvert definitely sings "Caged up rage, swarming hornet hive" (Calvert had an obsession with insect swarms, especially hornets; they appear in many of his songs). |

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

I remember that ad! This one was Desmond Dekker's Israelites. Weren't there some others too? My favourite misheard lyric is "Excuse me while I kiss this guy". There's also a line in a Coverdale-Page song which goes "pour your ocean over me" and it sounds just like "pour your horse sh*t over me". Edited by chopper |

Opeth's new album has a few... "I hear them devouring! Pass me the tacos of the earth!" (Festering jackals of the earth!) "Draining the weenus!" (Draining the weakness!) "the SEMEN!" (de-CEIVING!)
I didn't make those up, I promise... Mikael mis-enunciates a few syllables while growling... or maybe he did it on purpose... but those three are pretty infamous already... |
