Hello, I've been using Prog-Archives.com for some time now. It's great for learning about new things in the prog-rock world, and also great for hearing mp3s's of groups you never heard before. I'm 50, and an old die-hard prog-head. I've been listening to prog since 1969 after hearing King Crimson's ITCOTCK (an album that changed my musical tastes forever), and relished in the wonderful 1970's heyday, but am also excited about the 90's and present prog comeback. I've grown to like all kinds of music, but dark, technically complex, and symphonic prog is my favorite music of choice still. I also like the Zeul bands like Magma and newer groups like the English band Guapo too. I decided to join this post to reply to a post about Mellotrons, my top prog-rock musical instrument. Some of my top 70's groups are (and not in any particular order) Crimson, Genesis (Gabriel/Hackett era only!), Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator (Thank God they're back!), Mike Oldfield, PFM, etc. Some newer groups are Paatos, Anglagard, Sinkadus, Wobbler, Guapo, White Willow, Landberk, The Watch, and more just to give an idea of what I like. If it's dark, and musically symphonic and somewhat complex, I'll like it. Add Mellotron and I'm in heaven! Any sugggestions for new artists I may not have heard would be most welcome. Thanks! |

Hey, Im new as well. You mentioned many of my faves. I had no clue
VDGG were back together! Have you heard I.Q's The Wake? That album has some of the best Mellotron sounds I've heard in a while. Grobshnitt (german prog), Univers Zero (zeul), Thinking Plague (a female-led gentle giant?!?) and Eloy (german mellotron-heavy prog) are some great obscure prog groups. The Art Bears and Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band (Trout Mask Replica and onward...) are more Art-rock\Rock In Opposition styled groups. More abrasive, very strange, but excellent. Hope this helps. Eric |

And I almost forgot, Gong!!! Camembert Electrique is a personal favorite,
hence the lyrics at the bottom of my posts, taken from the final movement on the song\album, Tropical Fish\Salene. An absolute must- hear! |

Hi Dennis, If you like VDGG, have you heard of the UK band Po90? (Parallel or 90 Degrees?) This should be down your line, and I'd start with Afterlifecycle (c1997) if I were you. They are on the Cyclops label. I don't think you'll be disappointed. By the way, a warm welcome to the site. Fandango |

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson
