I have no argument with "Americans",where did I say that?
I dont even believe there is much difference between Brits and Yanks culturally at all.
Why is it that everytime someone criticises a facet of American life they almost become an enemy of the state? Let's be frank,we criticise your President and nearly 50% of Americans must have those same criticisms,because they sure as hell didnt vote for him.
This whole thread is about Human Rights and Civil Liberties,but specific to decisions taken in your country to reduce freedoms.

My real problem with this thread is that freedom infringement in this country has been going on a long time before now. Starting back to the early 60s when a kid in school all of sudden doesn't have the freedom to say or not say a prayer in school. Now this is not the result of what the people in this country want. It's just simply the result of a court judge taking the law in his own hands. It's not voted on, it's not legislated. And the same people who advocate this kind judicial activism are the same people who cry foul when something like the Patriot Act get voted in through the legislature. The stench of hypocrisy on this just riles me.

So,what you are saying is that sometimes it is right to curtail freedom (the times when you agree with it) and sometimes it is wrong (when you dont agree with it).

I still stand behind that. The curtailing of freedoms even right now are simply voted on. The Patriot Act was just once again voted in. But if some people had their way, they would take it to some appointed judge who would say "You're right. It's unconstitutional. Let's just get rid of it!".

Wow, you guys filled 2+ pages with this crap while I was away trying to troubleshoot my 802.11g issues!
I'd love to articulate a rebuttal, but you'll all need to give me
something more substantial to work with. The Doctor assuming that
"social commentary" begins and ends with GWB pretty much killed off
that particular tangent, and MtS just can't seem to get past the
recount issue. Tony doesn't need any help, his intelligence, passion
and compassion (and especially his sense of humor) balances out his
desire for...uh...qu'est le mot juste...provocation? So I guess I'll
lend a hand to the side that needs it the most: yes, blacks and women
should be able to stand on their own feet without overbearing
legislation and counterproductive social propaganda in their favor, and
not all rich white guys are sucking the joy out of the world through
their greed and desire for control. Plus, I'm all in favor of Doctor
Who...well, the Tom Baker years, at least...

You're right of course Mark. Actually I've decided that it is beneath me even to respond to him at all anymore. He's obviously got a lot of issues and I really don't have the time or energy to spend arguing with lesser beings.
I'm done with this particular line of argument anyway. It's been taken about as far as it can go now. Nothing can be accomplished by beating this particular dead horse.

I still don't know where you're getting this racist crap from! I haven't read anything from the Doc that's even remotely racist. You've been listening to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton too much. Those guys do nothing more than exploit blacks. They'll make a black man getting a jay-walking ticket look like racial injustice. Why? Simple, that's the business they're in. If there weren't any racism here, they would be out of business. So what do they do? They try and invent as much racism as possible. They don't want the 50s and 60s to be over.
