Frankly, I think you could make a case for Black Sabbath starting metal, but since their ideas (besides their muse) came from elsewhere, I'll go with "Seven and Seven Is" by Love, from 1967.
I mentioned earlier three other sources one could consider "metal", although I wouldn't argue that they might be instead "hard rock"-- Amboy Dukes' "Young Love", Blue Cheer's "Gimme Love" and Moby Grape's "Hey Grandma", also from 1967.

Bitterblogger, interesting yes I mean and meant exactly this, that was first metal track to me to date. That I am aware of and written/sang/performed by any band at the time curious now, who do you perceive as being the first metal song? hugs

George because of his willingness to use feedback early on. Also, he was the first guitar hero and you can't have metal without a guitar at the forefront.

John Lennon. I'm not sure it's quite metal, but I Want You (She's So Heavy) is certainly one of their heaviest songs. He also wrote, Everybody's Got Something to Hide (except for me and my Monkey) and that has some metal-esque guitar.
Yoko's early '70s stuff is as proto-metal as it gets.... her bands sound like Ash Ra Tempel or Amon Duul II in their early years. Great shrieking over Krautrock jams.....never thought I would say this, but I enjoy Yoko's first few albums more than any other Beatle's solo stuff.....and I'm a big George solo fan.
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

I would say George, if only for his spiky guitar soloing here and there, but I never once thought of 'metal' styling when listening to the few Beatles things I own.
