Silver Apples were Electronic music / Experimental rock / Psychedelic rock duo.
The Monkees were Pop rock quartette. Pet Sounds by Beach Boys is U.S. Progressive rock as same as it was Electric Flag. THIS is Rock. Edited by Svetonio - June 04 2014 at 19:19 |

^Incorrect. If the Electric Flag can be considered popular and I believe that they can, then they beat out the Monkees with the album of the movie theme to The Trip. And session drummer Hal Blaine even released a few singles featuring the MOOG. It's kind of like musical archeology!! BTW, Harrison's MOOG album was actually titled Electronic Sounds.

Incorrect. Apparently the first popular album to first use the Moog synthesiser extensively was the 1967 album by The Monkees "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd" (source Wiki). Micky Dolenz bought it. I always thought the first Moog in pop culture was used by the Beach Boys on "Pet Sounds" and especially "Good Vibrations" but apparently that space age noise was generated by an instrument called an Electro-Theremin, which is not a synthesiser. This instrument was also previously used for the theme music of the TV show "My Favourite Martian". That was a great show! The original Dr Who theme (1963) was generated on a Moog, but obviously it wasn't released as a commercial product...or was it?

No need for apologies Steve. Svetonio is widely know around these parts for confusing and misunderstanding facts and music history. The Silver Apples was a rock band which infused synths into their sound in a highly innovative manner. Just because they also happened to be psychedelic and a wee bit experimental doesn't take away from them being a rock band.
Oh and nice post there. I love reading the "mature" members' memories I had never heard about that album of George's. Thanks for that. |

^In my attempt to stay politically correct with genres and sub genres, I sometimes confuse myself. My apologies. In an effort to keep things simple, let me use the descriptive terms of my day (yes I'm that old). In 1969 George Harrison recorded an album called Musical Sounds using the newly invented Moog synthesizer. The album's content was regarded as "Advent garde/experimental." The Beatles used George's Moog to record the bizarre lead on Maxwell's Silver Hammer and some coloring on the song Because for 1969's Abbey Road album. This "Popular" music album was the first to use synths as far as I know. However, The Beatles don't get credit because after creating a social revolution, I don't think that they were interested in advancing the Moog or starting new musical genres.

You didn't hear me. Pete Townshend never was an Electronic music artist nor Kosmische Musik artist. He was / is a Rock artist who was inspired in late sixties by Electronic music (by Terry RIley actually), and recorded BOR and WGFA in 1971, and he was the first one who did do something like that in Rock. You can't compare The Who and Silver Apples because they weren't in the same category. The Who were Rock quartette, Silver Apples were Electronic music / Experimental rock / Psychedelic rock duo. So, apples to apples. Edited by Svetonio - June 03 2014 at 07:25 |

^Going to have to have to go with Guldbamsan on this one. I did some checking and Silver Apples as well as the Germans beat Pete to the Rock punch but everyone can be the fist man to step foot on the (Keith) Moon.

As you know, Mr Townshend was not only played a synth solos at Who's Next; he grafted that minimalistic music composer Terry Riley's piece of music A Rainbow In Curved Air into a classic rock form.. Of course, there is also his fantastic synth work at Her Majesty Quadrophenia, as well as he was played nothing less exiting synths at Tommy soundtrack where he re-writed that pretty flat original album from 1969. Also, Mr Townshend was experimenting with electronics on Endless Wire the album released in 2006, and again it's masterfully grafted on a rock form. There is a huge list of beautiful things what that genius was invented in Rock. Edited by Svetonio - June 02 2014 at 20:22 |

^I was thinking of rock when I wrote my post because as you said someone always beats someone to the punch when it comes to innovation but if Pete was indeed the first synth recorded rock artist, I'll be completely floored as I a already admire the man on so many levels.

I know that Mr Townshend wasn't the first guy who get an idea to play a bit with synthesizers; there's always something *before*. However, electronic music owes its glorious entry into Rock to Mr Townshend without a question. Of course, I had in mind BOR and WGFA - which is incidentally one of the best political songs in Rock. Again, I note that when I said "Rock" in my previous post, I didn't think about the rock music in general terms which would include progressive rock too, with all of its styles from symphonic rock to krautrock. Actually, I mentioned "Rock" as the subgenre what represents the bands as The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Queen, Boston, and so on. Maybe now in the time of so many tags, it sounds weird, but back then in the seventies, the term "Rock" is meant both that distinct genre represented by above mentioned bands, and also the term *rock* meant an umbrella for the whole rock music. Liverpool University, October 1971. This may be the first time that BOR was played live.

Got to give it up for the man. He wrote intelligent concept albums and is a sixties icon. I amazed that he even survived the sixties!! I don't know if he was an electric keyboard pioneer (I doubt it) but his synth playing gave Who songs great depth. Happy B'day Pete.

^As much as I adore Pete, you are giving him far too much credit. He certainly wasn't the first to incorporate electronics in rock music. That's just factually wrong. Silver Apples and White Noise did so much much earlier, and I haven't even scratched the surface of the German artists, who did more for the marriage of rock and electronics than any other nationality.....and again well before good ol Pete

Also, Mr Townshend was invented that controlled feedback and used electronics for the first time in Rock ( Who's Next ) - in really majestic way... so, he is the greatest innovator in Rock. edit: Of course, I meant "Rock" as a subgenre, not *rock* as an umbrella for all of the subgenres (of rock music). ...and just as a decor... ...an unique show. Amoreuse (16:40 - 21:35) is my fav tune from this live allbum.

ah well he should not be alone anymore as a single double-album he mostly came up with became a milestone when it was released on this day back in 1969:
here's the whole background of it in a nutshell: or if you want an actual documentary on this matter, here's the full "Sensation: The Story of Tommy": and also, join in on the poll to see which song from the album is the best that i myself put up: |
