Topic: Your city by night? Posted: April 25 2013 at 14:12 |
Coimbra is great, and Portugal in general a lovely underrated country! As a Spanish I know that many Spanish and Portuguese seem to have some rivalry but this is only because of ignorance, any Spanish having visited Portugal or any Portuguese having visited Spain knows that we feel like in our second home when visiting the neighbour country (as is the case with most people who have not traveled enough. Intensive traveling would solve most of the world's hatred problems, if economy would allow it, travelling should be a compulsory subject for all teens from 15 to 25 years old, even more than history, chemistry or literature).

Coimbra, a small city known as the learning centre of Portugal, (in)famous for it's student life.

When it will be finished there will be an even higher tower in the center, this is a rendition of how it should look like (probably I will die before seeing it finished). I used to live very near from it, I could see the towers from my terrace (actually I still own the apartment but I have it rented)

If I posted a pic of the Belgian village I currently live in at night it would be just a black square
But I'l always consider myself also a citizen of my native Barcelona, it's a very nice city to live in, in a radius of less than 150 Km you have big city, countryside, sea, mountain, a bit of everything... you can move from the beach to a ski resort in 1.5 hours drive.

It seems that we share some similar memories. Maybe we have attended the same IQ gig (to which I went by bike as well, must have been the Nomzamo tour; even today I travel most of the time by bike). I know that Peter Hammill has come to Utrecht several times. I remember I went to see John Cale, Camel and David Gilmour there as well. |
Have you been a student in Utrecht too? I was later into IQ: only from the Ever tour on I went to see them. I've seen Camel too, but not in Utrecht. In Rotterdam, my city of birth, I also went to see bands going by bike, like Camel. It's the Dutch way Since I live in Belgium, I don't take the bike very often any more. Less cycle paths, it's a pity, but taking the car has also become a habit, I admit |
I have been a student in Utrecht too (although I hardly studied ). And to violate my own rules concerning internet silence about my whereabouts a bit more, I never left and I've been lurking around over there for more than 35 years now. |
Oh, I took my time as well for my studies . I left the beautiful city because of my job. But... a wonderful city and I'm glad I've could have lived there for
some years. |
I had the luck to work at biking distance . I always liked that region.

Brisbane is one of the best kept secrets in the southern hemisphere aesthetically (if you disregard what became tantamount to Bjelke-Petersen's Police state of the 70's) - strange but true - look it up if you don't believe me that Queensland, Australia was governed by an institutionally corrupt regime who often sought recourse to law enforcement agencies that resembled the east German Stasi in their brutality and ruthlessness. First time Billy Connolly toured Australia, he was beaten up by the Police in Brisbane - hence his 70's joke that if the world was ever to undergo an enema they should insert it in Brisbane...'Arkansas with a beach' (Greg Proops)

Is that Utrecht? I used to live there, and it looks it. |
Yes, this is Utrecht indeed. Some more characteristics: The Dom church (tower): Unique for Utrecht are the wharf storage facilities: And even more, though often unnoticed: Lantern consoles. The lanterns are designed in the 1950s after the model of gas lanterns, which were replaced by electric lanterns c. 1905. Some of their pedestals have a unique sculpture. I guess there are some 600 of them. These were created in the late 1950s: |

There isn't much to see, it has a population of 2000 and is 4 miles from one boundary to the next, so as you can imagine it's not exactly densely populated, we have one pub, a church, a cricket ground and bowling green... and that's about it. The pub (called The Castle of Comfort) looks quaint, but it's not the friendliest place in the world, I've drank in there once and since then have referred to it as the Castle of Cold Comfort.
