Canadian Band 'The Collectors' 1968 [on vinyl] and had been playing proto-prog awhile prior to it.

The Clouds Scrapbook has to be a leading contender, especially as 1-2-3 was probably the first band to play truly progressive music (1966).

I think that the Freak Out album (btw, probably the first double LP rock album) is one of the best Prog Rock album ever. It was the first great and really Prog album
Regarding these heydays of the great British Prog Rock Movement, it was started with Family's Doll House, then that freshness of the movement was over when KC were disbanded after Larks masterpiece.. IMHO.

It is unbelievably awesome and you should pick up a copy at your earliest convenience, but it comes from 1968, well after Freak Out and Revolver. |

I don't agree. Freak Out! was a sort of satirization of the pop music at the time on the first two sides of the album. And sides three and four were more dominated by experimental (musique concrète) collages. Groundbreaking, influential and challenging, yes, (and the compositions were quite a bit more advanced than the general pop of the time). But full blown prog, no. But don't take in what I say about sh*t I probably don't know much about.

* sound of Lemming's new Admin office being locked-up, his things unfeelingly left in front of building, and a bill for the truck *
Hey people wake up ! This is a Prog discussion forum and no one wants to drone on about early proto-prog, pre-prog, foreprog and any other prog you like ? Since when ? Is anybody out there ? |

^ very true, in fact I've got a boot from that period - Tis the Season to be Jelly from his bootleg set - that is good evidence for this, they even play King Kong; I believe it is a very important document

Pretty much this, although Frank Zappa's debut was pretty close to this time as well. |
