Well, back in the nineties one of Hitler's Mercedes Benzes that had been on display in the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa for decades and was offered for sale because it was not considered to be appropriate for the collection and to raise money for the acquisition of other more appropriate artifacts. Within a few days the offer was withdrawn because of fears that the neo-nazis would get their paws on it and turn it into some sort of shrine. It remained on display but I'm not sure whether or not it's still being displayed in the new building.
This recent theft either shows that either the nazi legacy lives on or it's just some one's idea of a joke. Why someone would want this beats the crap out of me.

Several years ago when I was in the Marine Corps I was stationed on a Naval base for a couple years. There was a new housing addition constructed and one of the streets was named "Seaman Trail" (keep in mind this was a Naval base) . That sign was stolen several times before the base commander decided to rename it "Orion Circle".

I'm amazed that anyone's surprised at the 'taboo brownie points' of said item. Where have you been the last 30 years ? Rock is littered with the boyish blasphemies of those who flirt with fascist iconography: e.g Throbbing Gristle used it as the logo for a record label. Joy Division were named after jewish female prisoners used as concubines by Nazi officers, Siouxsie Sioux wore a swastika armband (the list goes on)

A definite possibility F*ck, I really hope it wasn't. Whoever stole it will get what's coming to them though. Edited by progkidjoel - December 18 2009 at 04:47 |

Probably the most unexplained theft I've heard of:
Auschwitz sign stolen Mind you, I guess there are those who'd pay a lot for something as infamous as this little item. |
