The only krautrock bands in my collection so far are Can, Kraftwerk, Amon Duul II, and Neu! but I'm always up for suggestions. I do know I want to check out Popul Vuh, Ash Ra Tempel, and Eloy.

Rivertree,Turzi and Heavy Water Experiments are good stuff!Regarding Krautrock and AD2:I must admit the
word is sometimes badly used, moreover Faust always rejected the phrase and there are smacks of racism when one considers its origins(very insulting towards german people).Krautrock,as far I know about it,deals with repetitive patterns, electro acoustic improvisations, kosmische sights on LSD,jam sessions inspired from american psychedelia with much darkness thrown in(Manuel Gottsching for example)and as a matter of fact is quite limitative because there are so many "schools".But AD2 can't be labelled as pure prog,of course it has prog elements, but also avant garde, psychedelic and pure madness+improvisation. But when one considers krautrock in a positive way(for me this process began
15/20 years earlier with post/rock bands such as Tortoise,GYBE.....)such as recognition of a real inventive musical movement full of experimentation and deprived of sonic mawkishness,Krautrock seems to fit for Amon Duul 2 and so many bands because this word is the open door to endless dreams and trips through galaxies.By the way Julian Cope also did a good work because he wanted to get rid of prejudice against this deservedly renowned german school of music!I perfectly understand what John Weinzerl said:he was here to make good music and did so,he just didn't want to be jailed in a short sighted critic's mind.

Interesting find Nightlamp ...
the link contains a blank at the end by the way and doesn't work - take this one he doesn't say 'we are NOT and have never been a Krautrock band' and he does not really offer arguments for his statement. I'm not very familiar with Amon Düül 2 but the music they actually make is not comparable with krautrock - that's true. But what category do they really fit considering the whole discography? Psychedelic, Avantgarde? I think Krautrock is best even when he has another opinion ... ![]() Edited by Rivertree - October 09 2008 at 15:44 |

Very interesting... In an August 2008 interview, John Weinzerl of Amon Duul II made the following statement when asked about ADII and Julian Cope's book Krautrocksampler:
(Note: italicized emphasis mine. Quote is midway down the page, just above the Tanz der Lemminge graphic) Can anyone offer illumination into Cope's treatment of ADII? Any thoughts on Weinzerl's statement? |

Yeah, Electric Silence is cool. In fact, I listened to it based on your recommendation on another forum, Pnoom!
Other cool albums I've heard in my short time listening to this subgenre are:
Krokodil - An Invisible World Revealed
Embryo - Steig Aus Agitation Free - Malesch Brave New World - Impressions on Reading Aldous Huxley |

Electric Silence is great, though Time Machine is blegh. Haven't heard the other one.
Also, the Velvet Underground were a huge influence on Krautrock and they are FANTASTIC.

I managed to track down a Krautrock band in PA which sounds really likeable for me: Dzyan, with a special regard to their Electric Silence album.

![]() Psychedelic underground is prog, psych and a lot of fun. One of the finest early german psych/prog records i ever found. Definitely one of the best albums to came out of Germany in the sixties, swifting guitars like the best of the west coast psychedelic groups as well as Progressive movements like early U.K. prog scene. My favorite song on this is the opening track, "So Bad" which reminds me a little bit of the intro to "Don't let me be misunderstood". It features the singer moaning 'everyteeng... soo ba-a-a-d, so b-a-a-a-a-d... la la la laaa laaa...' over and over again until a manic guitar solo panning left and right takes over. http://rateyourmusic.com |

I haven't heard Lucifer's Friend but I'd recommend Scorpions' debut album Lonesome Crow to anyone who likes psychedelic-jazzy-folky-proggy-floydish rock. And there are no whistling solos! |

IMO Scorpion and Lucifer's Friend are hard rock bands, not kraut bands.
