Greatest and most solid musical ever written: My Fair Lady
other than that... I am shocked not to see any Sondheim in your list... (Yes he wrote the lyrics for West Side Story, but that was truly Bernstein's musical). Sweeney Todd, Into The Woods, Pacific Overtures, Assassins, Passion, A Little Night Music, Follies, Nine........
Jesus Christ Superstar, as I have stated before, is pretty close to Prog.. And Gethsemane is a masterpiece song. Rocky Horror has a special place in my heart.... My first wife and I loved performing as Riff Raff and Magenta.... :) Tommy... Good musical as well....
From your list..... JCS I guess.....

The only things I liked about that show were the costumes, and the set design. |

If you really hate opera, better yet try with non-italian style opera... Don't go with Puccini or Donizetti or Verdi or even Mozart's "italian" operas like Idomeneo or Le nozze di Figaro or Rossinni, as you won't change your mind... Try Wagner's Tetralogie Der Ring Des Nibelungen, try Tahnhauser, Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg, or even better, try some russian opera like Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov.... That will change your mind that all opera is like italian opera, which I could guess is the style you've learned to dislike..

If you think you'll never like opera, "Don Giovanni" or - even better - "Die Zauberflöte" by Mr Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will certainly operate a huge conversion!

How true. To anyone who thinks they could never like Opera, try "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (The Barber of Seville). It might just change your mind. |

I've only seen two of these choices live: "Phantom of the Opera" (sung in Japanese in Osaka), "Jesus Christ Superstar" (a local high-school production -- Vancouver). I did enjoy going to see "Les Miserables", and wanted to see "Cats" done live.
As far as movie musicals (rock operas) I've seen go, well, I enjoy Tommy. One I'd love to see live is Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds. One I don't want to see is the musical stage version of Lord of the Rings (loved the books as a kid, and could barely watch Jackson's film adaptation -- Bad Taste was so much better. Don't think I could stomach Tolkien's work as a musical).
Seriously, have you listened to/ watched all of them? "Orfeo 9" is a terrific Italian rock opera (haven't heard it many years). But it's not going to be every one's cup of tea. Actually, I happen to like much classic opera, as well as rock operas and musicals. I happen to like Monteverdi's "Orfeo", but different strokes for different folks. A pivotal moment for me embracing opera was hearing Delibes' "Lachme" in the movie "The Hunger" (for those who've seen it, okay, I was more interested in watching Sarandon and Deneuve in their own flower duet). Actually. I've always enjoyed female operatic singing.... Still, like most types of music, there's stuff I like I like, and stuff I don't. Maybe I'll go with Jesus Christ Superstar from this list. On the other hand, RHPS is such a fun, campy romp. |

You've both, of course, heard or seen all of them ![]() ...and as for you Tony - "second only to opera" - bloody phillistine! Pay £150 to listen to huge ladies shouting for 5 hours, and you know you've been entertained! Tsch! For my book the one glaring ommission from the list is 'Chicago'; excellent musical (especially if you can get hold of the original cast recording |
