Ratings are mostly meaningless.

You love the album -- great!

Three Friends was the first GG album to click for me. While I initially wasn't very fond of Acquiring the Taste, I liked Three Friends. On the third listen, Peel the Paint suddenly seemed like the best song in the world, so I started over, and loved the whole album. Then I decided to retry Acquiring the Taste, and it too clicked. Then their debut clicked. Then I got Octopus, and it clicked, and so on. So Three Friends is the album that got me into GG, I'm eternally thankful! I don't listen to it very often though, but it's just as good as AtT and Octopus. I might review it soon.

........who cares?   Your opinion is the only one that matters.

I love every GG album I have  (of course, I stopped after "Interview")

Why have you stopped after In'terview? The Missing Piece is also a very good album and even Civilian has it's moments...

I personally don't think that Three Friends is Gentle Giant's best album. The best albums are Free Hand, The Power And The Glory and In'terview in my opinion. Three Friends is not bad, but it's somehow too short and does not create such a mood as for example Acquiring The Taste or The Power And The Glory. I have given it 4.0 stars (read my review if you like) But it is the weakest of the albums from 1970 until Playing The Fool.

However, I love "Mr Class And Quality" and "Three Friends" and I also like "Prologue" and "Schooldays" a lot... Thumbs UpClap

Gentle Giant rules! Wink

3 friends is the greatest of GG's first 5 albums. Mister class and quality is a classic tune. Schooldays and Prologue are awesome and Working all day is cool. I give it 9/10. Octopus only gets an 8 from me.

TO EL BOTHY:

As one of these people, I haven't yet, but I will, for what it is worth. However ,my view is that 5 stars should be awarded only in the most exceptional circumstances. Personally I am quite disenchanted at all the 5s given by reviewers - it seems to me there are far too many so called 'masterpieces' out there!

Therefore, in keeping with the views expressed in my thread topic ,I'd give 'Three Friends' about a 4.45 and that's not going to vastly affect it's overall ranking.
I don't believe in giving a 5 for the sake of trying to lift the average rating alone.

Good to see so many positive responses to this 'Three Friends' appreciation thread.
Looking still the same after all these years...

For Me Free Hand, remians at the bottom of the barrel in the GG catolog.  Granted "On Reflection" is amzing but its too choppy for me.

I guess everyone has a little different taste when it comes to GG. Personaly, I don't like Acquiring the Taste all that much. Not to say I hate it (oh no certainly not)  I just don't think it deserves as high a rating as it has right now.

I haven't heard the album, though I hope to soon (I've only heard Glass House, Free Hand, and Octopus so far, all of which are quite impressive).  I have high hopes.

By the way, Ricochet, I like your dark side of the drowning witch signature.

Whistler- there's a good chance you'll like GG because of your fondness for Tull, though the two bands are quite different sounding and Giant is not as aggressive as Tull. Frankly, I prefer Ian and the Boys but there are a lot of big GG fans. I haven't had my Gentle Giant moment yet...but I sure hope I do.

If it's a 4,5 star album in your opinion, than it's natural the average is lower, cause others might not like it as much, let's say that some consider it even 5 stars, and others think it's 4 stars, and even some rate it below four, the average will lie somewhere between 2 and 4, so if it rates 4,19, a lot of people seem to enjoy it, or at least not many of the people who rate it low have rated it yet.

I expect the average to get lower, for 4 stars is a good rating for the album, and since the fans already reviewed it, it's time for the others to come in and lower the average.
