I hate "best" questions commonly.   For taste, I like Nirvana's and The Verve's, but will go with Nirvana's for its impact.

Four big-name others that came to my mind are Radiohead's "Creep", Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun", REM's "Losing My Religion" and The Smashing Pumpkins's "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". And I love the already mentioned hit by RHCP, "Under the Bridge".

I was not listening to much 90s music in the 90s but adore the 90s now. A favourite rock song of mine from the decade that I often mention is Swans' "Helpless Child" which I would expect to be way more popular now than then.
"Questions are a burden to others; answers a prison for oneself" (The Prisoner, 1967).

SLTS is the best out of those. BS is great too and think Oasis has several songs better than Wonderwall, although it's a great song. But I'd even say DLBIA is more "iconic".

I'd add Under the Bridge as iconic songs from that period as well.
I shook my head and smiled a whisper knowing all about the place

My 90s were more female, and it was a glorious decade.

Hole
Natalie Merchant
Garbage
Tori Amos
Bjork
Heather Nova
PJ Harvey
Veruca Salt
Pumpkins (the one boy-led band I'd mention)
Fiona Apple
No Doubt
Babes in Toyland
Cranberries
Concrete Blonde

Pearl Jam, Nirvana, STP? meh

If I disregard personal taste: For cultural impact and iconic status, I don't think any of the other songs come close to Smells Like Teen Spirit.

If I take personal taste into consideration, I'd also choose Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Bitter Sweet Symphony. is a great song though. I don't like the two remaining ones.

there are no rules here, only taste, im very much interested in songwriting and the craftmanship of songs. In my hiattus from PA im figguring out, i am interested in prog and progressivness, but I am also atracted to the simple rule "of the perfect song", these four songs charecterize to me the core of pure song-crafting in my decade that is the 90s.

to me the four greatest songs in alternative rock and songs that gives me the shivvers everytime
