I'm going with the majority here too, Gentle Giant.

Gentle Giant followed by Banco del Mutuo Soccorso. And ELP would be my third choice.

For me, I'd order them Flower Kings, IQ, ELP, Gentle Giant, Banco.

Banco gets the short-end of the stick mostly because I am not that familiar with them, and I have difficulty listening to bands with non-English vocals.  Call it a personal quirk.

ELP - a no-brainer for me.

I understand the point you make, but...

what I can say is that over the course of their discographies, I prefer IQ to say Arena or Pendragon...

I prefer Spock's to Flower Kings....

I prefer ELP to Triumvirat....

when it comes to GG, I really don't know anyone I can compare their music with, but I'd be happy to learn!

Too bad for Banco that Gentle Giant is an option as well. But those are the two bands I love out of these. The former a little more than the latter.

Gentle Giant. While sitting at a red light I got bombarded by homonyms from the car in the next lane.

Only GG and Flower Kings in the running here. Gentle Giant are a band I loved a lot when I first got into prog and I listened to all 8 of their classic albums plus the missing piece. But I almost never listen to them anymore, can't say why, but after I worked my way through their discography they kind of faded from my mind.

Flower Kings, I've only ever loved two albums (Space Revolver and Sum of No Evil) despite having listened to a lot by now. But most of the stuff they release is just totally missable/forgettable. Despite this, because they keep releasing stuff and I always give it at least one or two spins, they feel more front of mind. But despite that I can't remember any song that's not on those two albums.

So ultimately I'll give it to GG. Octopus, Power and the Passion and Acquiring the Taste outdo the two Flower Kings albums I actually enjoy, by quite a bit.

I keep saying I'm gonna make a silly poll like a proto-prog band vs a progressive death metal one. I'm curious how many people would scold me. LOL
