Pirates - quite possibly ELP's last great epic.

Nice to see some love for Pirates. That's a song that divides opinion and recently Steven Wilson on a yt video said it was one of the worst songs he ever heard likening it to a Gilbert and Sullivan opera. I clicked the 'unsubscribe' button shortly after. It ranks. for me in my top 5 ELP songs (the others being Karn Evil 9, Tarkus, Trilogy and From The Beginning). Never got bored of it, Emerson and Lake were immensely proud of it and the band played it to the death. There are some very well liked live versions of it without the orchestra , the one on Live At The Royal Albert Hall being a go to version for many fans. That all said I'm voting for the very wonderful Horizon by Jon and Vangelis. A real shining light at a time when prog seemingly was dead, this duo then go and produce an absolute masterpiece. IMO.

Interesting, I don't end up usually being with the majority. Mind you, I don't know more than half of these. They do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and I would like to do one too at some time with some of my favourites as I very much like this theme.

Thanks to everyone for participating - every epic received at least one vote!

Of course, after I posted this, I thought of another I should have mentioned: the all-powerful "FIFO" suite (17:13) by Sky, from their 1980 second album.

I don't know many of the songs here, which is nice cause it gives me some good classic prog I've missed out on. Of the ones I do know, Pirates is my favorite, and was one of my first prog loves. I listened to that song quite a bit, even more than Karn Evil 9 and Tarkus (Probably cause it was a good bit shorter than those, while still being long).

I'd also venture to say that Peter Hammil's Flight from 1980 could be on the list too. I love that one.

Curiously, I have all the listed albums except for Rush and Holdsworth.
Difficult to choose also becuase they are very different:

Horizon is a suite, Smallcreep's day is half a concept album, Pirates is a long cinematic track and 1984 is an unusual electronic instrumental from a guitarist. Even if about 15 minutes long, I've never thought of Safe as to an epic (but it's a great long song).

Which one I listen to more often? it's between Horizon and Smallcreep
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Not sure. The ones I know I mostly like, but don't love. The Fall of the House of Usher, which has the most votes here, is perhaps my favourite too, but kind of. I really love the band part of the song, but the symphonic intro does just about nothing for me, so it's about half of the song that I really love.

Alan Parsons Project. They delivered a secret laptop to me that has three million pictures of hard-boiled eggs.
