Queen Elizabeth were the British kosmische musik duo of synthesists Julian Cope (ex-The Teardrop Explodes) and Tim Lewis (ex-Coil), the latter better known as Thighpaulsandra. Active from the mid-1990s to around the turn of the century, Cope and Lewis issued two studio LPs, a live record and a posthumous archival album (which featured Thighpaulsandra collaborator Butros Müller-Staal temporarily filling in for him), all distributed via Cope's label Head Heritage except for their Echo-released debut.
Inspired by Berlin School as much as Todd Rundgren's "A Treatise on Cosmic Fire" from his 1975 LP Initiation, the duo's peculiar sound is one part Pink-era Tangerine Dream-esque space ambient drift and one part Faust-like krautrock irreverence. A deep love for the source material is evident, undergirded by a cheeky sense of humour and a decidedly anti-monarchical bent. "Queen Elizabeth" (1994) "Queen Elizabeth 2: Elizabeth Vagina" (1997) "Queen Elizabeth Hall" (2009) "The Corpse of Queen Elizabeth" (2024) |
