Hi Drew!
I love Mr Fox, it's a must. Particularly their one over the top proggy track This isn't British but it is kind of in the style and really should not be missed |

Hi,
Goodness ... I have at least 13 of those in my collection. And there is more ... and one of them had a song that I have never found whose voice it is ... it was a song about "... mr radio please play my song ... " and it was neat and far out ... I kept thinking it was Gay Woods, or Shirley Collins, but have never found this song in their listings, and it was a song Guy Guden used to play a lot ... and I still don't know who it was ... (Edit) Yep .. .Gay and Terry Woods

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

While I wouldn't call this short song Prog Folk (she is in PA as I suggested her a decade ago). This song is what turned me on to her and remains one of my folk favourites. I knew of her before I knew of Nick Drake, but I associate those two (a certain fragility and melancholy). |

Now I remember why: though she has songs on which she sings over folk instruments and/or folk arrangements, she always impressed me as a blues-rock/jazz singer--kind of like Janis Joplin or Robert Plant. So, I'm not going to add her to my "Prog Folk" Sirens' list. Thanks for the reminder, though! Such a commanding performer! |

Hi Drew. My list of classic era British female Folk singers would look virtually the same as yours, with the addition of the relatively unknown Alisha Sufit of Magic Carpet.

I'd include Julie Driscoll, later Julie Tippett.

Carole Pegg from Mr Fox ( now an ethnomusicologist as well as a folk singer and involved in Mongolian music, dance and oral traditions)
Also Shirley Collins the undisputed Queen of English folk who was married to Ashley Hutchings and featured in the Albion band (if we're looking at Prog folk) and also produced the mesmeric 'Love, Death and the Lady' with her sister Dolly. Lal and Norma Waterson have to have a mention too.. Great to see Mandy Morton mentioned.. a real fave of mine too

Lots I love on the list, and Jacqui McShee would be one of the first to come to mind. Vashti Bunyan is a very particular favourite of mine.

There's no doubt about it, as an American there are a slew of "classic" era female British Prog Folk singers who cast their Homerian spell over me with their vocal talents. I've tried to list a few below. If you have others to add to my list, I'd love to know of them.
Joan (Bartle) Saul (Stone Angel) Madeleine Bland (Fuchsia) Máire Brennan (Clannad) Jill Child (Midwinter) Sandy Denny (Strawbs, Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, The Bunch) Judy Dyble (Fairport Convention) Barbara Gaskin (Spirogyra, Hatfield of the North) Vanessa Hall-Smith (Fuchsia) Celia Humphries (Trees) Shirley Kent (The Ghost) Nest Llwelyn (Pererin) Vivienne McAuliffe (Principal Edwards Magic Theatre, Affinity, Patrick Moraz, Michael Chapman, Anthony Phillips) Christina "Licorice" McKechnie (The Incredible String Band) Jacqui McShee (Pentangle) Lee Menelaus (Agincourt, Ithaca) Mandy Morton (Spriguns of Tolgus) Allison O'Donnell (Mellow Candle) Sally Oldfield (Sally Oldfield, Mike Oldfield, Steve Hackett) Joy Perkis (Shide & Acorn) Linda Peters Thompson (Fairport Convention, The Bunch, Richard & Linda Thompson) Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span, Maddy Prior Band, Silly Sisters) Janet Rogers (Fuchsia) Clodagh Simonds (Mellow Candle, Mike Oldfield, Fovea Hex) Rose Simpson (The Incredible String Band) Ann Steuart (Tudor Lodge) Alisha Sufit (Magic Carpet) June Tabor (June Tabor, Silly Sisters) Bobbie Watson (Comus) Gay Woods (Steeleye Span, The Woods Band) Edited by BrufordFreak - February 07 2021 at 07:21 |
