I think that time has come and gone. If it didn't happen in/around 2007, it wasn't going to happen.

Age, health, lack of inspiration, etc. All these things preclude the amount of time and energy it would entail to create a new Genesis album they all felt was on par with the best they could do. 3-man, 5-man, whatever. Neither Peter nor 3-man has put out a new album in 20+ years. They obviously are preoccupied with something else.

Genesis is dead...long live Genesis.

Like I've said before, I personally would like it to sound like And Then There Were Three and Duke with traces of Wind And Wuthering Smile

I don't expect young people to know who Marillion is. I don't even expect people who were young at Marillion's prime to know who Marillion is.

Maybe try to understand the appeal and if it’s not for you move on, those those 9 pre 1980s albums are still there. It’s the equivalent of people who relentlessly bitch about Dennis Deyoung not being in Styx, it’s just such a silly thing only Boomers complain about. If in 40 years you haven’t been able to find anything to fill that empty prog era genesis hole in your heart maybe it isn’t Genesis that’s the issue.
If you like thier sickly pop music then please stop being an apologist for them and get on with your pop music post, as I get quite tired of that.

Look, bands change, that's what they do. You cant expect a band to do the same kind of music forever. The 70's were a time when prog rock was in, but as the 80's approaches, prog rock had lost its popularity and people were more into pop rock. Genesis did what every band ever has done, they had to get with the program and make something that would be marketable in the 80's. However, UNLIKE most bands, they were successful in that. Honestly, i think that the second period gives me far more respect for Genesis, because they were able to compkletely change their style and still make it great. Just because it isnt prog rock doesnt mean it is bad music. Their prog rock was some of the best prog rock out there, and their pop rock was some of the best pop rock out there. They proved that they could adapt to any musical climate, and that makes them great. It may not be your style, but their pop rock was still great, just as great as their pop rock.

This thread is intended for speculation and rumours about a possible new Genesis studio album. There are plenty of other places for debating which era of the band is better...

Now that the band are in rehearsals for the upcoming tour (which has been postponed a few times), are there any rumours about new material? Is it possible that some new song(s) will be premiered on the tour?

That's an interesting suggestion! Both Steve Hackett and Ant Phillips have been doing guest appearances on other people's albums so why not on an album by their old band. That either of them would re-join the band full-time is not something I think is realistic, however.

Well if you substitute “not something I think is realistic”  for “it is utterly impossible“, you would be nearer the truth. It will never happen, and neither should it.

Yeah, I agree. Hackett and Phillips are doing well on their own. I was just playing with the thought that they
either of them, or both of them, could guest on a new album by the three man line up. Because, why not? Tongue

The real question is: Will we ever see a new Peter Gabriel studio album?

Like I said on the Yes thread, I'd probably buy it if it happened. They might still have a couple gems left in their old brains.

Anyway, the odds of a new studio album are pretty slim. I think the best chance of them getting together is either a one-off show or a handful of shows. I don't expect Gabriel or Hackett would be involved.

As a younger listener I never dissected the music like that, when I heard Abacab I liked it because it came from a band that I liked a lot, more great music. When Gabriel and Collins came out with solo albums it was a blessing to hear more music from two great artists that helped build Genesis.
