^Spot on ! (... and I was one to stupidely disregard Collins in the past, as you mention - fortunately now long overcome as I do highly enjoy his drumming skills, including elsewhere in Brand X, etc)

His analysis brings out how INTRICATE the song is. This is the point that those who tend more towards prog metal (because it sounds more technical and maybe is for all I know) miss about bands like Genesis. It may not hit a high BPM rate and may not have sweep picking that makes Yngwie's face melt but when you play it, you are supposed to do justice to all those tiny nuances too. All those go to make Dance on a volcano the great track that it is and particularly Collins' drumming which I feel gets underrated simply because he happened to sell out later as a popstar.

I've seen him do a few of these. ( Didn't get a chance to see this one yet) He does a nice job. Good break down of song structure, isolating tracks, etc... Some time i hear things I never notices before. Very cool!

Great video, thanks for sharing. I really feel like picking up my guitar and learn it.
I think it's fascinating that many of their complex compositions came from intuition and playing together and not from theoretical effort.

Oh, I'm a Beato fan too. Very excellent, I agree. When I first started watching he left my head spinning. Now I usually comprehend pretty well what he's talking about and am able to apply it. He often does straight up Jazz stuff, sometimes Rock, and sometimes something in the middle. He doesn't often explore Prog per se in the British sense, more American-style Fusion. Clearly, though, as Quinino observes, he has some unmistakable enthusiasm for "quintessential" Prog. Just a real treat. And one can enjoy his stuff as a listener listening to good playing and good wisdom. Or as a musician seeking good advice in a broad general sense. Or still further as a musician rewinding slowing down and catching every note he plays. |

Rick Beato is excellent, all his videos are very well done and filled with really good information, especially for musicians.

Check out Rick Beato's latest from his series, What Makes This Song Great? He examines Genesis' Dance On a Volcano in wonderful detail. This is a real treat, folks.
