^^^ I felt that they were one of those bands who had integral members that couldn't be replaced because it changed the whole sound and dynamic of the band. I actually don't like the way they still tour under the Queen name, but that's just my opinion. It wasn't just Freddies vocals, it was his whole persona and presence and image, that were part of the Queen brand.
I though all the albums up to Hot Space were 4 star albums, although maybe the debut was a 3 star album for me. I'd need to hear that again. It's been many years. Hot Space and beyond three stars, although the track Innuendo was as good as anything on Night at the Opera IMO. |

Freddie wasn't Queen, hey.
The band was and will always be four rockers. Especially Taylor and May can't imagine never performing. I think it's in their own good richt to keep the Queen-flame burning and still tour. They made several attempts at having a solocareer. Taylor even made 5 albums on his own and 3 with a band. Nobody bought them. May had one moderately succesfull single and album, but his second soloalbum didn't sell. When they started the Queen + Rodgers thing, they were succesful again. People bought their album and attented their shows. Rodgers was a great friend of the band. And they tried and succeeded. Maybe a handful of oldskool Queen-fans didn't like it, but they don't care. I have absolutely no gudge towards May nor Taylor. Both very sympathetic rockers and great performers. I love how they keep going strong. Also I don't share the opinion that Queen didn't release any good album after 1980. I even think The Game was their worst album (although still 3* worth). Hot Space was a stellar r&b/funk album, wich (in my opinion) should have been more funk/disco/r&b. Even Michael Jackson said he was influenced by that album. I love how Queen could literally do anything, from speedmetal to rockabilly to opera to gospel to discofunk.

Excellent band, and one of the most original and eclectic rock bands ever. Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack and Night at the Opera are all works of genius, in fact all the albums that preceded Hot Space were pretty damn good.
I was watching their 1975 concert at Hammersmith Odeon, London on YT a few days back. They were masters at commanding a crowd, and Freddie was an unsurpassed singer in terms of skill and versatility. After he died they should have called it a day. The very idea of replacing Freddie with anyone is completely wrong. Zep without Plant? Genesis without Gabriel OR Collins? Doesn't work does it.. |

Hey if it's good who cares what box it fits in? Half of my listening habits reside outside the PA sphere and I'm quite ok with that. Post-punk, jazz, electronica, pop, hip-hop, funk, folk you name it. If it has got soul I've got the time.

Queen got me into prog. Although I tend to like prog the Queen-way. Short songs with lots of vocal extravaganza. Apparently most of the prog I like is prog-related or crossover prog on this website.

Hi there Renard. I moved your thread to the proto/related part of the forum earlier today Queen are here under prog related hence the move. I used to be the biggest Queen fan back when I was a small boy but must admit that it's been years since I last span any of their records. I did however play The Prophet's Song to a friend of mine this summer and ended up getting blown away myself So cool when you re-discover a great song. |

Been listening all day to the new album On Air.
It features BBC-sessions from 1973 up to 1977. On spotify is the 2cd version. The 6 cd version contains some unreleased concert footage. I have the awkward feeling that a lot of this BBC material was already released in the deluxe editions of several of Queen's studio albums. But on the other hand, it's not bad to see the songs compiled, and it contains some real true gems. Also we already had Live at the Beeb, wich contained some stellar semi-live versions of Queen I and Queen II-songs.
All in all, On Air is a welcome addition to my collection, and a great follow up to Live at The Odeon and Live at The Rainbow, the last few years. I'm curious what they will release next year november/december. |
