Amazing band!! In my opinion, The Mountain is their best album. Affinity is cool and I admire them for the sound choice (coming straight from the '80s). But the Mountain is amazing!!

Love Haken, Affinity is a great album. I got into IQ at about the same time as Haken, maybe 3-4 years ago, a lot of material to get through from IQ.
I also got into Riverside at about the same time, check out some of the older stuff up through Shrine of New Generation Salves. The newer stuff is a bit more mellow (but still really good!)

Love Haken. The Mountain is easily one of my favourite albums ever, and all the albums before are really cool. though I was a bit disappointed with Affinity... still, looking forward to their next venture for sure!

Then you need to have your ears seen to. Seriously. Haken are probably the greatest new prog band of the 2010s. If 90s belonged to DT and 00s belonged to Porcupine Tree, then the 10s will be seen as Haken's decade.

Suppose, you're just a crazy hakenoid.

First post, haha! But I just did a cover of one of their songs. Check it out if you're a fan of the band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA6XXLsXDfE

I just discovered Haken - picked up Affinity partly because it was the one with the bonus disc with all-instrumental versions. Wasn't sure I liked it on first listen but have grown to love it! It makes me think of Drama/90125 era Yes with what I think Linkin Park should sound like. The drummer is great, there's some complex stuff going on underneath the vocal melodies - at first it was too disconnected for me but I've learned to listen to the big picture instead of get distracted the weird rhythms.
Apparently the Affinity album is a pretty big stylistic shift - way more '80s (in a good way, I grew up in the '80s and hate most of the music of that decade but of course there's good stuff too), plus all the band members contributed to the compositions. I don't see myself going back to their earlier albums - The Mountain doesn't really appeal to me that much though I'm sure it's the favorite of others.
The thing that bums me out is that if I had discovered them a month or two sooner I could have seen them live! I'm afraid they will change again before I see them - I would like to see them in support of this album...

Hey everyone. Has anyone heard this band before? It's so over the top, but I love it! Does anyone have recommendations for other prog metal bands like them? |
For my ears, Haken is simply a pathetic parody to excellent Threshold (many people rated them as the British answer to DT).
Just take a listen this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jetVB7HYByo&list=PL2DU3TBNutEdIH348BWRzApQCJKk_e7Hd&index=3 ...or another epic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kkl8dCQ-bts

Although Leprous is from Norway, they are very friendly with Haken and both bands influence each other.

You might check out Anubis Gate and Leprous. I'd even suggest Withem and Illusion Suite. Haken is really good though. I enjoy all of their albums with my favorite being the latest one, Affinity.

Haken are amazing! I love them! I'd also recommend: Methodica TesseracT Il Rumore Bianco Riverside
And, of course, Opeth and Tool. Always good! ;)

I've become a big Haken fan, but I came to them late. I gave them a listen a few years ago, and I wasn't initially convinced. I found their songs too manic, scattered, and long-winded. I had to go through Leprous first; they're an amazing band. Leprous has a similar hyper-driven musical style and a similar-sounding singer. It's the first band I would think of while listening to Haken.

Visions is a masterpiece. Aquarius is awesome and emotional but Visions is just... wow. Definitely my favorite prog metal band. Beardfish isn't metal but they push the same buttons, I find.

I listen to Visions constantly and it's easily one of my favorite CDs from newer bands. However, I can't get into The Mountain as much. I've listened to it a few times and I think Visions is far superior.

Huge fan here...very stoked for seeing them on their upcoming tour.
I was kinda sad that Toronto was skipped over. Any Toronto fans in here?
