This was just posted at Progressive Ears by Steve Feigenbaum:
I just got this from Roger Trigaux who said it was ok to publicize this information.

Mmm... this sounds nice. The beats, whether or not they're sampled, I can't tell, are great. And song progression is also very, very nice--I haven't heard much electronica nor math like this before. I'd be more tempted to call this contemporary classical. Thanks for the rec'.

A friend at Prog-Ears recommended this band - No Use For Humans (brilliant name):
A fine mix of avant/electronica/oddity...

"January Sky" on Strange Attractors is just... not my thing at all.
The rest of the album was very good though. Not as good as the debut though. However, further listens will assuredly help. |

She sounds like Dagmar but more accessible.

I prefer her on Strange Attractors at the moment but I've only heard it the once through and this is the second listen I'm having now.
She sounds like a cross between Dagmar Krause and Julie Andrews. It's weird but I like it. |

I also tend to like instrumental chamber prog, but whats-her-face does a damn fine job with U-Totem. I need to hear Motor Totemist Guild, since they contributed her and a bassoonist and maybe somebody else to U-Totem.

So... a recap...
Just re-listened to U Totem and it's excellent. It has to be said though, that I prefer Zaar, Ahvak and Sotos' Platypus to it. I just tend to prefer my chamber prog without vocals, mostly. That's just me, I guess. It's still excellent mind you and I'll definitely listen to a lot more. |

Right, that's my next shopping expedition sorted... ![]() I already knew I wanted more Present. One of my favourite recent discoveries (out of so many!). And I gave a listen to some Ahvak and U Totem samples earlier, they definitely seem to my taste, so they're on the list for sure. I'll wait for a bit though, I've bought a lot recently (don't want to overspend or end up with a listening backlog!). [Currently playing Weidorje again. Soundbite: Nice combination of pound-bash-stomp and dreamy soothing spaciness... ![]() |

If you haven't done so already, I recommend that you listen to Drake's solo albums; Splendid stuff!
And on that note, has anyone had a chance to listen to Tim Hodgkinson's solo material?
Also some brilliant and very challenging. I'd recommend particularly the album Each In Our Thoughts
In the others he's collaborating with the Hyperion Ensemble, Iancu Dumtrescu, and Ana Maria Avram and goes into Spectral compositional style, electro-acoustics and total avant-garde.
Fabulous!

Kerman and Drake are 2 of the most important musicians on the RIO scene, but somehow they seem to work far better seperately than they do together.

They're way too sterile and overproduced for my tastes. Which is odd because I absolutely love what Drake did with NeBeLNeST. |
