Friday:
Griot - Gerald (With storybook this time, the lyrics finally make sense.) Řresund Space Collective - West, Space & Love Vol.2 (Very inspired music ) Saturday: Peste & Sida - Portem-se Bem Push Kings - s/t Yawning Man - Nomadic Pursuits Tangerine Dream - Phaedra Sunday. Happy birthday Audun Motorpsycho - Behind the Sun Led Zeppelin - III (I cannot unhear the squeaky drum stool and the clean amp buzz on "Since I've Been Loving You", it's so annoying ) (Coincidentally, two albums I really like that have some really weak closers, in my opinion) Pristine - Reboot (Because they are Norwegian and I really wanted to listen to it )

Anyway, from the past couple of days:
T2 - It'll All Work Out In Boomland - A quintessential slab of everything that was going on in the early 70's in British rock music. No More White Horses is a track that I haven't paid much attention to in the past that really stuck out this time. Not only is that concluding guitar solo the most intense moment on the record, the softer, more melancholic sections have a certain power to them as well. Great as always. Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow - The best thing Jeff Beck ever worked on. I really love this album for so many reasons. It's certainly one of the more original fusion albums of the 70's and the more composed nature with the occasional synth orchestrations and whatnot really make it a lot more interesting to listen to than a lot of the jam-based stuff many groups were doing at the time. Tight performances and a great span of moods and styles make this one a very replay-able album. Ramones - Leave Home - This one just came on in shuffle. There's only a handful of tracks on here that I like, namely Glad To See You Go, Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment and Carbona Not Glue. So catchy! Traveling Wilburys - Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 - My less preferred of the two Traveling Wilburys albums, but I still really like a few of the songs on here, like She's My Baby (that guitar solo ROCKS) and Wilbury Twist, which is plenty of fun. Some of the other folk rock tracks on here are enjoyable, too, for nostalgia's sake more than anything. Jeff Beck - Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop - A great guitar player's album. The rock tracks rock hard and the softer tracks Behind The Veil and Where Were You are quite beautiful. Yes - Yes - I've actually warmed up to this one quite a bit the past few times I've listened to it. I think I'm going to rewrite my (largely negative) review of it if I find time later. Rayuela - Rayuela - One of my all time faves and it loses no energy with each listen. One thing I couldn't help but notice this time around is how great of a track Vientos De La Calma is. What a fantastic and surprisingly original take on the blues. Actually, a lot of the arrangements on this album are very subtly creative. There's no doubt that Rayuela were a bunch of musicians who were as intelligent as they were soulful. They knew exactly what they were capable of and executed their ideas perfectly. Love it. Quicksilver Messenger Service - Happy Trails - This is only the second or third time I've actually put this on. I bought it for about $5 a few months ago with absolutely no expectations and I've gotta say, they've been met! The music on here isn't bad by any means but it really amounts to little more than a lot of very typical pentatonic rock/country/blues jamming, sort of like a less inspired Grateful Dead performance. Love the cover art, though!

Il Baletto di Bronzo - Ys Great, great album. What else is there to say. I like how heaviness of this work is made to shake hands with complexity, calculation, and elegance, something that all too many bands forget about.
Quiet Sun - Mainstream What a revival! I forgot how amazing this album is. I've enjoyed it so much. Really, this is one of the most unique albums I've heard in days. Experimentation, beauty, intelligence, and astonishing atmosphere meet on Mainstream. Philip Glass - Music with Changing Parts I had the pleasure of seeing Philip Glass live when I was about 10 or 11, here in Lublin. I even handed him flowers after the concert. Now I am re-discovering his music and absolutely loving it. Music with Changing Parts is really amazing in its textural wealth. Fusioon - Fusioon Weird group. I am not familiar with many bands from Italy. These guys play elaborate prog, similar to... everything, yet nothing. They do a bit of classical-inspired tunes as well as jazzy pieces. Overall, this is nothing to write home about, but will definitely please a Canterbury fan that I am. |

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso – Come in Ul’Ultima Cena – This is actually a seriously good album, not a poor second of music on the entire disc.
Mirror - Daybreak Premiata Forneria Marconi – L’isola di Niente Arena – The Unquiet Sky Camel – Stationary Traveller Yes – Time and a Word Yes – Big Generator – Still a perfectly good rock/pop album. How odd that I would prefer to listen to this any day over the recent Anderson/Stolt album! Even this album has more instrumental passages and less singing! Premiata Forneria Marconi – Passpartu – In a totally different way, this is also a great little album! Sam, you wouldn’t believe it, Goatboy sings really well on it (in Italian too): |

^Yeah, the cover is nice indeed. As to the material itself, my initial thoughts are just... my initial thoughts. I will keep on coming back to the album. Who knows, it might grow on me!

Yesterday:
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Io Sano Nato Libero Banco changes with every album as you crawl up their discography. My initial feeling about this one recall those when I first checked out Dawrin! Something is different and I'm not enjoying it immensly, but am able to appreciate how well-crafted this is. Emerson Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery One album that I think I've definitely judged to quickly. I am really starting to appreciate this one now. Especially for how well it is composed. The melodies are everywhere and they are good melodies actually. The bombast performance does not bother me anymore - I even like it. Murple - Io Sono Murple Well, I don't like it. It's rather medicore in my opinion. It's quite medicore and insignificant to me. The composition and performance are decent, but the overall effect seems quite single-faceted and boring. Sorry, guys from Murple. |
