I'm not too up on most of the symphonic stuff, so I can't help with other bands like Yes. I feel like they're pretty much one of a kind anyway, excluding bands like Starcastle who pretty much go for the Yes sound. I just really can't stand the mixing on GftO - the songs themselves may be good, but the album seems very shrill to my ears. I've never listened to Riverside or Sky Architect, so I can't help with either of those either.

City Lights didn't even usually carry what I wanted, but he would order stuff for me without much extra cost, it was an independent store, and it had that perfect "basement album store" atmosphere. Half the time I went in, I didn't even end up getting anything, I just talked to him and some of the other people there about music for a while.
As far as functionality goes, I do prefer internet stores. It's much easier to find what I want online than going store to store to store, and I still get the majority of the satisfaction of getting the album once it finally arrives.
Out of the three albums you mentioned there, I'd recommend Atom Heart Mother by the way - Going for the One is my least favorite Yes album before the poppy years, and Division Bell is my least favorite Floyd so far.

I live in a small town with no dedicated music store around, just MalWart and other generic retailers. There's a small city that's a two-hour drive that has a few music store I like to frequent, and they will hold special orders for months. I (hopefully) will be able to go this weekend to pick up some DVDs and a copy of The Sabbath Assembly's "Restored To One" that I ordered back in November.

I'm old-fashioned in that I like being surprised by record store goodies. If you go in with zero expectations, you find yourself much more willing to take risks. I'm sad to see such possibilities aren't available for our Iranian proggers
