^ Sure thing. I've deducted 20 points from Steven Wilson and added 20 points to Steve Hackett, which now puts him in poll position.

Hey Psychedelic Paul, I didn't mean to put Steven Wilson as my number 1...
I just put all my top solo artists in random order... I meant for Steve Hackett to be number 1. As if I would put Wilson above Hackett. Can I relegate Wilson to like, number 7?

yes, but Kevin Moore released music under a band name - Chroma Key. If it was under his own name, than it would be a solo artist. See my confusion?

^ Even a solo artist usually has a band behind them, unless you're Mike Oldfield.

I see Ayreon as a band, not a solo artist. Actually Arjen released music under his full name. That is a solo album then. ![]() I wanted to add Chroma key to my list but thought it does not fit the criteria for this list. Chroma Key is Kevin Moore's project/band, at least the first two albums have some session musicians so it still feels like a band, I don't know.

^ Ayreon (Arjen Lucassen) is generally regarded as a solo artist, but could also be considered as a band too, because there's a large band of guest vocalists featured in each of his albums, so he would probably fall into your third category, being somewhere between a solo artist and a band.

There are a lot of co called 'bands' that are really solo projects. John Mitchell (Frost, Arena etc) said in an interview that record companies prefer to market rock albums by 'bands' rather than 'solo artist'. My point is that there are probably more than a few bands that are really solo projects (ie The Tangent (Andy Tillson) , Lonely Robot (John Mitchell) , *Frost (Jem Godfrey) etc.
This may extend even back to the seventies. In my opinion there is no one more talented than Bill Nelson . For Be Bop Deluxe he wrote most of the songs as well as singing and playing lead guitar . The line up changed many times but by strange coincidence (or not) he always remained! How was this a real band?! I guess we need a third category that falls between bands and solo artists.

I have to agree with Jean; it doesn't prove anything. To make it mean anything you would have to make a census how many albums there are by bands and how many by solo artists and put the numbers into relation. Have you done that?

My remark was not meant to be a question about the album. I only wanted to mention it was left out but was interrupted by dinner. When I finally posted it I was not aware someone else had already mentioned it.

An excellent album IMO. I remember waiting for the album to hit the stores, I bought a cassette first, ohh wait maybe an 8-track, regardless I have a few formats. Those 4 songs are amazing.....It's fun to think about where the catalog, music writing would have gone to as a group. Although I do think there would have been a big pause as Plant was thinking a solo career, one can only wonder what lied ahead for the Hammer of the Gods.
